Spanish to English Social Sciences Philosophy Discussion of interculturality

This phrase confuses me. "In order to sustain this argument, it is necessary to/we must make the effort both to discover and preserve/uphold..." the value of ??? and what should be demanded of all citizens?, as well as the concessions that it is legitimate to make for cultural differences.

I cannot form the second part of this sentence, as you can see, as I cannot quite grasp its meaning. Please help!
UK Eng, and thanks in advance.

my take...

To support this concept/theory, one must make a conscious effort to discover and maintain what should be valued and demanded of others while at the same time making concessions for legitimate cultural differences

Always a pleasure, Kate!

agree Peter van der Hoek : I like yours a lot! "while at the same time..." sounds excellent!

You're very kind! Saludos Peter!
agree Taña Dalglish : Very nice! You have captured the essence of the phrase well; but it is the "legitimate concessions .." Of course, it can always be tweaked, but the general idea is there! Un abrazo.

Gracias Taña! Besos!
neutral Anton Baer : Not really "legitimate cultural differences" but rather as Steve phrases it; and not "maintain" but "preserve"

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to all your help, played around with this and resolved the phrase. Mine was probably closest to Lydia´s version, with a couple of changes ("legitimate concessions") etc. Thanks everyone. Great answers and advice. "

... what has to be important and required/demanded of all citizens

Kate, this is my take on it. Hope it works or at least gives you some ideas.

Mike :)

In order to sustain this argument, it is necessary to/we must make the effort both to discover and preserve/uphold what has to be important and required/demanded of all citizens, as well as the legitimate concessions to be made accounting for cultural differences.

A shot

In order to sustain this argument, we must strive to discover and preserve what must be valued and demanded of everyone, while making concessions to legitimate cultural differences.

To maintain said supposition, we must make an effort... (see below)

Divide and conquer!

To maintain said supposition,
we must make an effort to discover and conserve
what must be of value and demanded by all,
as well as the concessions that must legitimately be made towards cultural differences.

(Nice challenge!)
Example sentence:

To maintain said supposition, we must make an effort to discover and conserve what must be of value and demanded by all, as well as the concessions that must legitimately be made towards cultural differences.

Peer comment(s):

agree Peter van der Hoek : I also like the way this sounds/reads. Good job!

[another rendering]

That principle requires that efforts be made to discover and preserve what must remain valid and be required of all, as well as the concessions that may legitimately be made to cultural differences.

The "supuesto" is that ethics can shape reality not simply accept it, even though it must take reality into account.

I call it a "principle." My rendering may not be the final one but I would stress that it is important to think through the meaning of the sentence, not just terms or phrases, and then say it in comprehensible English, even if the sentence structure ends up being different.
