French term

pierres jointoyées

French to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
Les trous d’ancrage de la charpente dans le mur pignon n’ont pas été rebouchés laissant la possibilité à des infiltrations pouvant dégrader le mur pignon composé de pierres jointoyées avec de la terre

I found "pointed stonework" for "jointoyer". Is it possible to say "pointed stones"?

pointed stonework

In EN, we tend to refer to 'stonework' rather than just 'stones', which then makes it easier to fit in 'pointed'.

Please note it is usually 'pointing' for stones / bricks etc., 'grouting' is most often used for tiling.

HOWEVER, please note!

Here, they probably don't actually mean pointing at all!

In fact, traditional stonework is never (to my knowledge) actually pointed with dried earth — that would be useless!

I think what they are actually talking about is the fact that the stones have been laid using 'mud' as the mortar — my own house was built this way! This is all very well, as long as the outside of the joints is pointed with 'proper', waterproof mortar; if not, the rain simply washes the mud away, and hey presto! your wall falls down.

So I think that is the very point being made here: the weatherproofing of the outer skin of the wall has been compromised, so the 'mud joints' between the stones are at risk.

Hence alhough my headword answer is usually the correct translation of the term asked, in this particular instance, I think you need to find a different solution; possibly: 'stonework bound together with mud'

agree Bourth (X) : Or sth. like "mud-bedded stone"? "Jointing" for mortar holding masonry together, "pointing" for the protective/decorative bit of mortar at the surface.

Thanks, Alex! Yes, I think the difference is vital here, even though the FR doesn't seem to make the same distinction.
