Reference Reference information: Lipoatrophy, the office disease It is known as “the office disease” and is a painless condition with no known cause which involves the atrophy of the subcutaneous fatty tissue. It can be seen in small circular cracks in the thigh area. The subcutaneous fat changes and small circular cracks appear in certain areas of the skin as if you were pressing them with your fingers. It is called semi-circular lipoatrophy and it is a rare condition, medical reports for which have existed since the mid seventies. As a result of the first reported cases - in 1974, two German doctors linked the condition suffered by three patients to the buildings in which they worked – speculation arose about the possibility that these marks could be the result of bad circulation, due to the structure of desk chairs or even a consequence of wearing tight clothing. In order to explain the causes of the appearance of these strange symptoms, in the 1980s various reports were produced. To begin with it was thought that there was a biological explanation, such as that small electrostatic shocks were being produced in the thigh area, through the desk. The local shocks in a specific area of the body closer to the base of the desk could explain the changes to the lipoatrophic tissue, as they would activate the macrophages which produce cytoquines, a type of protein which can modify the adipose tissue structure. Reversible disease Almost two decade ago, the symptoms were reported on a large scale in 900 workers at a Belgian company. The most relevant findings included the fact that the affected area of the lower extremities coincided with the height of the office furniture, and that the lesions (2 centimetres wide and up to 20 centimetres long) could be up to 5 millimetres deep. Curiously, these lesions disappeared when the affected people were away from their place of work for an extended period of time, such as on maternity leave and they subsequently reappeared when the employee returned to work. As time goes by, it has been observed that this disease, classified as “very rare" has become more common in certain working environments. Two factors may play a part in its appearance, on the one hand, a high level of static electricity in the furniture (the presence of cables and computers, in other words, electromagnetic fields under the table) and low relative humidity in the work area, which facilitates the accumulation of electrical charges in objects. One solution could be to adjust the ventilation systems and control the humidity levels in the building. Cases of semi-circular lipoatrophy occur mainly in new buildings. In such cases, it is necessary to carry out an investigation to control the CO2, ozone and radon levels in the atmosphere, the degree of atmospheric dust particles, the microbiological quality, the radioactivity measures in the building and the relative humidity levels as well as checking that the magnetic force fields do not exceed the recommended limits. In this respect, a study carried out in the Netherlands measured electric and magnetic fields in places of work which caused semi-circular lipoatrophy. The results showed that the electric field readings were excessively high below desks, at knee height. This data led researchers to consider the possibility that certain types of tables absorbed the electromagnetic fields generated by the cables and computers and became charged by them. When they subsequently come into contact with a conductor, such as the human body, there is an electrical discharge. Given that semi-circular lipoatrophy generally occurs in the upper thigh area, it is thought that the discharge also occurs in that area. Sick building syndrome Although research continues in order to find a scientific explanation to justify the appearance of these cases, it is believed that semi-circular lipoatrophy may be caused by sick building syndrome of which there are two types: temporary and permanent. In the first case, new offices with a lot of technological equipment and electrical fields may be the places which are most likely to experience cases of semi-circular lipoatrophy, places with low humidity and few earth wires. Recently, several autonomous regions have recorded cases of semi-circular lipoatrophy. People suffering from it are usually tired, lacking in strength in the legs and may also experience a marked feeling of fatigue. However, if the cause of the condition is removed, semi-circular lipoatrophy, which does not cause painful symptoms, is reversible in 95% of cases, as proven by people who, on retirement, have noticed the condition disappear. The case of a permanently sick building is more serious since the symptoms often remain even after shock treatment. |
