Sovradimensionate/Overpopulated/Rare I think that 'sovradimensionate' is used in opposition to 'specie di notevole interesse...", as a sort of parallel between large population and rare population. Maybe scientific interest refers to rare species that require further scientific research, or to given species that are of particular interest. Can you provide the full paragraph?

the "but" is a judgment made by the writer of the text. No matter what you may think, I suggest you should leave it as a "but".

I think u're getting confused at the scientific interest part. They are not scientifically interesting but of specific or new scientific interest. Hence the sentence would be ...characterised by overpopulated species but also by species of particular scientific interest.

Might it be that it refers to species that have aleady been observed and described to the full (lit. over-dimensioned/measured)? "But" there are others that are of interest. I may be way, way off, but it's the only way I can think of to explain the "but".
