neutral  Stefanie Reinhold: Is it not possible that 'Szeneviertel' refers to a certain 'Szene', e.g. the 'Drogenszene' or something like that? Then hot spot, for example is not enough, you would have to say 'hot spot for xyz', imo.

  -> Well, it goes hand in hand which is exactly what makes those areas so colorful. I traveled Hamburg several times for business, days at a time. St. Pauli has indeed developped from "Eek!" to "Chic!" :-)) See also Textclick's contribution below. Thanks!

Just a thought.

I lived in Hamburg for quite a while. The older and seedier parts like St. P. etc. are getting very fashionable these days.

St. Pauli used to be "hookers boulevard" and was a tourist attraction (the Beatles played here!) ;-)
