O uso de tardio assim é super estranho no Brasil.
A idéia é de encomenda feita com pouco tempo faltando para o prazo acabar. Placement se refere a "place an order", fazer um pedido.
Acho que atrasado dá a idéia de que há um prazo menor. A idéia é de "de última hora" aí.
