un lieu du souvenir

place of remembrance

Note from asker:
Yes that was my first thought. I can understand a war museum as a place of remembrance. But a museum showing mainly articles from a particular region must have a better title. Don't you think?
Perhaps a bit clumsy but: In 1850, the opening of the Musée Lorrain in the old town saw the construction of an establishment dedicated to the remembrance of the region’s history. What do you think?
"preserving the region's history"?
What about 'heritage' in place of history?
I agree, no good what-so-ever.

disagree Alain Pommet : Remembrance/memory implies 'living' memory. I think something like 'recalling the region's past' might be better. Remembrance of history is rather bizarre.

agree Paula McMullan : I agree, first thing that came to my mind. Not sure who would "recall the religion's past" if there weren't living!!

memorial

In British English this can mean a site, with a statue of honour, often with a list of names. eg war memorial. Place of rememberance sounds good, but memorial or war memorial is a more usual figure of speech.

Perhaps you could turn it as, for example, 'a site was set up to commemorate the region's history' or something along those lines
Peer comment(s):

disagree Alain Pommet : Sorry to be difficult but a 'heritage site' in 1850 is completely anachronistic!

you're probably right Alain ... commemorative might work but your 'recalling the past is a good option. You should post it. I'll leave it anyway as it could help someone in another context
