Historical academic article
Das heutige Botschaftsgebäude an der Tiergartenstraße stellt hierbei den dritten Botschaftssitz dar, der Italien in diesem exponierten Stadtbereich auf diplomatischer Ebene repräsentiert.
Unsure how to translate "exponiert" - exposed?, undeveloped? not built up? As far as I know, the area was never particularly cluttered with buildings. Any ideas?

high-profile / visible
perhaps a more metaphorical sense is meant here -- that is, exposed to public or international view -- given the context?

representational / prestigious / prominently located [situated]
This suggestion follows the idea of Martin's answer. The use of "representational" is very popular with architects wanting to stress the prestigious nature of urban areas/zones etc. You may also use "prestigious" itself, though, or even "prominently located".
In my opinion, "exponiert" has got the connotations of "prominent position" and "prime location" here.

prominent / high-profile
Not really sure in this context.
It could mean "open" in the sense of being next to the Tiergarten; until 10 years ago the street (and the embassy building) were hidden away behind the Kulturforum and Philharmonie, but given the "heutige" reference, it may well mean "prominent" or "high-profile" (or even "conspicuous") given its proximity to the new Potsdamer Platz.

Second thoughts ... As this is an academic article and not e.g. for promotional/marketing purposes (real estate, architect's resumé etc.), I'm moving away from "prominent" - because a) only a marketing man would call it that and b) we're talking about an area.
In addition, the embassies in the area (also incl. Scandinvian, Japanese, Indian and others) are still hidden away somewhat. And as it's talking about a leafy but centrally located area, I'd go for "high-profile" or even "exclusive" (which is theoretically not as such the same as "exponiert", but the author may well have just been waffling).
