This phrase (opor a terceiros) really has me stumped. I'm not sure how best to translate it.
"As sociedades comerciais têm como lei pessoal a lei do Estado onde se encontre situada a sede principal e efectiva da sua administração. A sociedade que tenha em Portugal a sede estatutária não pode, contudo, opor a terceiros a sua sujeição a lei diferente da lei portuguesa.".

at their discretion "impose on third paries" laws different from ..
It means that they (commercial societies "inteties") cannot impose dofferent laws than those imposed by the government. So I wouls translate it as "impose on third paries"
Example sentence:
,may not, of their own will, impose a law different than that of the Portuguese law.
