If a valve is designated a long-term storage item, extra attention should be paid to its packing.
Deterioration may cause the packing to leak, in which case the gland bolts should be tightened or the packing replaced.
If during inspection it becomes clear that the valve is leaking between packing and stem/body, sometimes retightening the packing can solve the problem.
