Italian term
Montaigne si affaccia nella Storia sostenendo le ragioni degli altri
Italian to English
Art/Literary
Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
Context: Speaking about the backdrop to a film, listing the horrors of the Counter Reformation period... and then goes on to say:
Eppure, tra le pieghe della controriforma, Montaigne si affaccia nella Storia sostenendo le ragioni degli altri.
I know that Montaigne represents reason and the intellect - but i don't know how to translate the term above! Any thoughts would be most appreciated!
Perhaps: 'Montaigne emerges in history, sustaining reason...'
Not sure!

Along comes Montaigne, to back up his predecessors' ideas
Lizzy, could the film be claiming that he was providing further evidence for the thinking of his predecessors, such as Erasmus? Would that fit the context?
From Wikipedia:
"Among the thinkers exploring similar ideas, one can mention Erasmus, Thomas More, and Guillaume Budé, all working about 50 years before Montaigne.

suddenly in history there is a Montaigne, who
this sounds ok to me, but maybe a native english speaker will know a more appropriate wording...it means that at some point in history a man like Montaigne appeared, who backs up the others reasoning.
