English term or phrase: high and dry
Dear colleagues,

I would be very grateful for any suggestions on how to translate the idiom "high and dry" in the following context:

"Please test the following numbers and circle the result which represents one of the following eight choices."

Among the choices are: 1 ring no answer, 2 customer recording/spoke to customer, 3 fax tone, 4 high and dry, 5 country busy.

Of course all the other expressions are clear to me and I understand the general meaning of "high and dry". (Although I only use it in the sense of "stranded".)

Does ist mean SIT/disconnection tone here?

Thank you very much for sharing your ideas with me.

German translation:Kein Anschluss {unter dieser Nummer}
Explanation:
From your context, it sounds like a telephone Umfrage (a job I had in a previous lifetime).

This sounds like what you were to mark if you got NOTHING, no recording, no ring tone, nothing. You dialed it and the line went dead.

So, this would be my suggestion.

Hi jccantrell,

Thanks for your help. The text is part of an IFS testing request that was sent from an American telco carrier to a German provider.
You are perfectly right! It means "no ring, no recording, nothing".

I would also translate it as "Leitung tot".

take care;)
