Italian term

collana madre

Italian to English Art/Literary Printing & Publishing comics
"XXXX, storica collana madre di serial di successo quali... "
Would "umbrella series" be the correct term? Thanks.

Proposed translations

59 mins

the original successful franchise, the series that was the mother of them all

the first term is a bit more formal, the second more informal, but both would explain the concept here.

from Wikipedia: The X-Men franchise, with its original stories of youthful alienation in which teens literally are the freaks they often figuratively feel like, has grown to become one of the most popular comic books producing dozens of spin-off series over the years and turning some of its writers and artists into industry stars.

Note from asker:
Hi Shannon, I'm not sure this is the concept; "collana madre" would be a series encompassing many other titles, each of which is a series. Thanks for your help.

neutral Anthony Green : can we be sure it's a franchise?

I've heard/seen franchise used to refer to books and shows that produced spinoffs, not only in the context of things like McDonalds
