short- /long-chipping

Adhesion wear (also known as attrition wear) occurs mainly at low machining temperatures on the tool's chip face. This can affect long-chipping and short-chipping workpiece materials including steel, aluminum and cast iron. This mechanism often forms a built-up edge (BUE) between the chip and the cutting edge. In this process, successive layers from the chip are welded and hardened, becoming part of the edge.

Peer comment(s):

agree Kent Johnson (X) : Some metals, like cast iron, fly off the workface in short chips. Most kinds of steel peel off in long shavings, rather like the coarse steel wool pads used to scrub pots. A "chip-breaker" is often ground along the top edge of the tool to prevent this.

easily chipped/not easily chipped

I've made a few enquiries here in Norway on this one, and I now know what it means, but don't have a technical translation for you. Hopefully this entry can jog someone's memory!
Metal can be "brittle" which means it will chip easily when drilled; or it can be "non-brittle" allowing drilling without the danger of chipping.
I'll keep on with my investigations until I see that the post is closed! Sorry not to be more helpful just yet!
