French term

à filets

French to English Other Cooking / Culinary Silver dishware
I'm translating a document that has a list of furniture, dishes, flatware, etc. and there are a few terms I'm not sure of. I'd appreciate any input. 2 petits plats "a filets". These are silver plates, in a section that mostly has serving utensils and dishes. I kind of doubt it's for serving fillets (of steak or fish) as the plates are small, and the dishes and silverware in the rest of the document are for 24 people. Could it be that the silver plate itself is pierced, decorative with holes in it? Or has some kind of trim? Thanks in advance.
Proposed translations (English)

with a fillet

Like you, I suspect that it wouldn't be for serving fillets (though it might be a specially-shaped dish for fish, as is common in larger sizes for whol salmon, fopr example...)

But I don't think the net / pierced idea is likely either --- I don't think the concept of 'filet' works well like that in FR, and it'd more likely be 'ajouré' (as often used for porcelain etc.)

My guess is that it means with a 'fillet' or band, probably decorative, and probably round the edge; I think they might even call it a 'bead'. Many stainless-steel dishes these are made cheaply and do not have any kind of edge, whereas traditional silver-plated flatware, however plain, was very often made with some kind of beaded edge --- decorative as well as reinforcing.

I'm afraid I don't know if there exists an exact term for this in EN (and you'd probably need to see a picture of the item in question to be sure how to describe it), but I hope this has maybe given you a third option for the meaning of 'filet'

Note also that it is the word used for the narrow coloured or gilded (etc.) border often found around the edge of china plates, so that could be another avenue...

agree Rachel Fell : how about "plates with border"; "bordered"? Are they the only things "a filet", or is it the whole lot?

Thanks, Rachel! Seems to me like it's JUST the "2 petits plats"?
