Italian term or phrase: Compensate
I'm translating several decisions from the Corte di Cassazione, concerning damages for civil liability ensuing from various types of accidents.

I'm not really sure what "compensate" refers to at the beginning of the second sentence of the following paragraph:

"Vale, in proposito, il criterio generale (articoli 1223 e 2056 cod. civ.) per cui il risarcimento deve comprendere così la perdita subita come il mancato guadagno, in quanto ne siano conseguenza immediata e diretta. Compensate, dunque, al giudice del merito, la concreta prudente commisurazione delle due voci indicate genericamente dalla norma positive e deve attendersi con attenta considerazione di tutte le particolarità delle specie, soggettive e oggettive, affinché il ristoro sia per un verso completo e per altro verso non si traduca in locupletazione senza causa."
