Viktoria, appologies if I came off as insulting to you - I have edited my last post as I certainly did not intend that.

I could supply you with a lot more of income generating ideas, besides sex ads. Please contact me privately for this and I'll give you the fairly long list of great ideas straight from the junk folder of my Thunderbird.

Food for thought Mar 13, 2009

Viktoria Gimbe wrote:

But had ProZ not been so avid in trying to turn half the planet into so-called translators, so they can soon after become paying members, maybe all the problems being actively discussed in the forum today wouldn't be around. Then, there wouldn't have been a need for Google ads, either.

And now, to thank loyal members who have been paying to be a part of this crumbling castle (and who have helped build its foundation), we get a yellow star. And insults.

Thanks for this eye-opening post, Viktoria.

Importance of paying members, visitor tracking and Google Ads Mar 13, 2009

Some of you may have heard that there was a school shooting here in Germany the day before yesterday. A 17-year old young man shot 15 people, injured many others and finally killed himself. Related to that incident, I watched a TV programme last night reporting about an Internet platform for young people (mainly pupils and students age 12-16) called SchülerVZ. The operators of SchülerVZ earn their money with Google Ads also. The TV programme reported that when entering the German term for "brass knuckles" (Schlagring) in the site's search field, a Google Ad appeared, leading the young people to all the many places on the Internet offering brass knuckles at special prices. So much for Google Ads.

I'm sorry, guys, but with the way this site is going, I'll think twice before renewing my membership when it's due to expire at the end of the year - even if that means I'll loose my red P badge and the newly awarded golden star.

Added: Ooops, just noticed that the golden stars have disappeared already ...

Let me add just one more thing ... Mar 13, 2009

... and then I'll shut up and go back to work.

It's the community - and ONLY the community - that is keeping proz.com alive. No community, no site, no need to create revenue by publishing Google Ads. The animated - to avoid the term "heated" - discussion in the Golden Star thread and elsewhere in the forums clearly shows that dissatisfaction among the community is growing ... and that should give you - Henry et al. at proz.com - ample food for thought.

Sorry Mar 13, 2009

ProZ was, and to a certain extent is, a great portal for translators. The ideas of Henry & Co. were all great ideas. This type of user is quickly becoming the majority, and their needs are not the same as those of long-time users. It seems to me that ProZ is trying to cater more to the newer variety of users. This has affected the quality of the site, the atmosphere, the image of ProZ users and to a certain extent, the image of the profession. Not to mention that the newer users surely cost more to maintain (a large portion of them doesn't pay but they also create support tickets, they also add BlueBoard ratings, etc.). I am a paying member. I am now thinking that, for what I get out of that membership, I am paying a bit too much. The price of membership has risen in recent years, yet the usability and the usefulness of the site have been shrinking. The gap is widening.

I just want to say that if we could have the ProZ of five years ago, not only would I find that the current price of membership is fair - I would be willing to pay double! This should be an indication of where ProZ could get the revenue now catered to by Google ads...

Offer us a quality site and we will happily pay for it. Offer us a site that's on a slippery slope, and you will have to rely on Google ads.

GoogleAds and SchülerVZ Mar 13, 2009

Hi LittleBalu,

About Google Ads

I watched a similar report on German TV - they confronted someone at SchülerVZ, asking him about the brass knuckles ads. He said that it wasn't their problem: after all, they were just "renting out ad space to Google".

At the end of the day, Google apologised and withdrew the offending ads - presumably after a lot of young people ordered.

Best regards,
Ralf

Hi Ralf,

It must have been the report I also watched. But isn't it frightening? The guy admitted to renting out ad space to Google and claimed that the ads themselves weren't his responsibility at all. The kids should look after themselves. "My name's Pilate: I wash my hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent" (forgive the Bible quote).

How can it be that "profit maximization" apparently overrules all common sense, exposing children (!) to sex ads, right-wing propaganda and the like? The ad for brass knuckles may have been removed, but the question is what has it been replaced with?

I read the thread that Aniello started on Google Ads and proz.com image (http://www.proz.com/forum/money_matters/126820-google_ads_and_proz_image.html). The examples quoted there of Google ads that keep popping up on various proz.com pages are embarrassing, to say the least.

I joined proz.com about 4 years ago because I thought it was a great platform for translation pros. Colleagues have been extremely helpful in many instances when I needed help with terms. Nevertheless, I won't renew my membership at the end of the year if proz.com keeps heading in the direction of "profit maximization", totally ignoring the interests of the people who made it possible and are keeping it alive.

Have a great weekend,
LB

Henry, I'd appreciate your view ... Mar 15, 2009

As it seems that Drew is not willing to respond to my various posts regarding the importance of paying members (the proz.com community) vs. visitors not related to the translation business (allegedly the target group of all those embarrassing Google Ads), and also regarding the tracking of visitor behaviour despite claims that GoogleAnalytics is no longer used, I'd appreciate your personal view on this matter (please see my previous posts in this thread).

Thanks a lot.

Google analytics not used Mar 16, 2009

LittleBalu Perhaps you did not see my other posts

We are not using Google analytics, but we have historical data, we have Google Adsense data, and we have our own internal server data. Again, we are working on a means to be able to identify potential end clients based on industry related search terms and prevent Google ads being delivered to them. Of the 1,000's of search terms that drive traffic to ProZ.com daily the ratio of non industry related terms to industry terms is 100 to 1 or greater. Very few industry related search terms land on forums, most go to our home page, the directory, or profile pages - where there are no Google ads.

No, what I am saying is why would we simply disregard the 100,000 non industry visitors that come to our site? This google adsense revenue helps us keep the site up and running for all users.

I am not suggesting that this non translation audience is more important than our community members, but they come to our site and we can connect them with the services they are looking for via adsense ads (even dating ads) and ProZ.com can earn some income from this activity that helps maintain the site for everyone.

Do you ask for some understanding?
Honestly you don't expect that any translator here is convinced?
I got the impression that the Proz team is happy that a lot of the translators who disapprove this kind of insensibility do not stumble across this thread.
Besides ads like
"Russian women" are not just innocent dating ads.
Proz attitude in this thread is very frustrating.

Where does ProZ.com draw the line? Mar 16, 2009

Drew,
Your comment makes me wonder where ProZ.com will draw the line.

Don't you think there are (or should be) limits as to what can be sold via a professional platform, or what should be sold in general? Is forced prostitution and human trafficking acceptable, as long as it can be blamed on something that may sometimes "slip through"?

BTW I just had another look at the topic announcing the opening of ProZ.com's office in the Ukraine (without being logged in). Th

BTW I just had another look at the topic announcing the opening of ProZ.com's office in the Ukraine (without being logged in). The first GoogleAd I see is for "FemmesUkraine" (tagline: "Find Your Russian Beauty!"). Tell me again about those filters?

To me, this stance is just as unacceptable as the approach shown by SchülerVZ, the German equivalent of Facebook for young students. Sure, they ran ads for brass knuckles, but that's all Google's fault.

Are you serious about this?

Ralf
