It used to, back in the 80's Apr 3, 2016

When I was learning English, music did help me a lot. After a while, however, I realized the sometimes poor language and the altered stresses to "fit into the music" would not be so helpful any more.

I don't listen to music generally Apr 4, 2016

and would go crazy if I had to work in an environment with musical background. I need silence! I cannot see how music could enrich anyone's translating abilities, or any abilities for that matter. Except the ability to kill the b*** making that din.

I have been a trained musician for years, therefore my default setting is to actively listen to music and I can't do that when I am translating.

Actually, when at my desk, I always have ear plugs in my ears and I sometimes even cover my ears with headphones on top of that - I live above a very busy crossroads...

I need total silence to hear the text read out in my mind and hear myself think/follow my train of thoughts.

But I will readily admit: when it comes to sound pollution, I am a bit extreme. I always go to bed with my ears fully plugged, otherwise I would have trouble falling asleep, distracted by all the small sounds around me...
