It is when you save yourcomputer files somewhere else other than on the computer / laptop (or whatever) you are using.

Paranoid. Jul 31, 2013

I've lost too many projects... Everything is automatically updated between my desktop and my laptop, my most recent projects synced with dropbox and everything dumped into the external hard drive every few days.

I've never lost any projects, so far.
As part of my "computer housekeeping" I do a full reinstall of my hard drive every 6 months or so to get rid of any bugs and junk etc. At this point I put my past work onto a USB drive, so I always have at least the last 20 years or so safe!

Wheever I remember to Aug 1, 2013

But, I have a Raid I computer which has two drives and mirrors everything I have on my main work drive.
If this drive fails for some reason, it automatically switches over to the other "healthier" of the two drives so that I can carry on what I'm doing while the system proceeds to repair and write back the content of the healthy drive to the sick drive.

I also put recent projects on USB drive when I have the inkling to do so.

Anytime I'm working on a longish project and don't want to lose even one sentence of it.

How often? Aug 1, 2013

I remember asking an IT colleague when I started out how often I should run a backup. His answer was "How much work do you want to redo?" Kind of focuses the mind...

continuous backup to external hard drive Aug 1, 2013

I keep an external hard drive plugged into my computer while I am working, and have File History (Windows 8) set up to back up every 10 minutes. Before File History, I used Acronis True Image. I also do almost all projects in Trados, which, as Simon mentioned, means that I technically create a backup every time I translate a sentence.

Basically, my answer to that question ("How much work do you want to redo?") is: none. I love revising, reworking and rewriting. But would hate to be forced to redo anything due to a technical failure!

I've recently purchased an external hard drive and it works in a continuous mode.
Other than that, I have a "nervous tic":) - I constantly hit Ctrl+S while translating.
