How to activate automatic dictionary search in Transit Satellite PE?

I'm using Transit Satellite PE 3.0. The online help states the following:
"Transit automatically searches the project dictionaries in the background for appropriate entries as you are translating. (...) Transit then highlights all dictionary entries found by TermStar."

Unfortunately this does not seem to work in my installation. When I proceed from segment to segment, nothing happens.

Does someone familiar with Transit have an idea what could be wrong?

Dictionary Jan 11, 2006

Hi,

Are you sure you do HAVE a dictionary? If you have only Transit Satellite PE 3.0, probably you just don't have any dictionaries. The dictionary must be sent by your PM as a part of the PXF file. If your dictionary widnow is empty, it means the dictionary doesn't exist for this language pair.
You can create dictionaries if you have Term Star (which is not free). If you have only the free Transit Satellite PE, just contact your PM (who must have TermStar). It just might be

You can create dictionaries if you have Term Star (which is not free). If you have only the free Transit Satellite PE, just contact your PM (who must have TermStar). It just might be the case they (in the agency) don't even create the dictionaries, as it is only worth it if at least a few translators will be using it.
Hope it helps.

I have project dictionaries Jan 11, 2006

Thanks for asking, Ewa.

I do have dictionaries that came with the project (not only one but two) and I can browse them, so theoretically I can look up every word (although I find the dictionary interface very user-unfriendly) -- but of course that's no substitute for automatic lookup by the program in every new cell without my contribution.

And you can see the words which are in the dictionary in red? If so, you just press ALT+T which lets you insert the term from the dictionary. I'm pretty sure you know this function and have tried it. I have no idea why it would not work:-( Sorry.

Alt+T is disabled Jan 11, 2006

Thanks once again, Ewa. I have found out about the Alt+T shortcut, but it's not available (the corresponding command in the menu (Edit/Insert term from dictionary) is greyed out, no idea why.

And I also don't see the terms in red, it's plain black. Maybe someone comes along who has had this problem and has solved it.

Thanks anyway,

Two types of dictionaries Jan 11, 2006

It is difficult to help without actually seeing something but I'll just try one more thing (please forgive me if I'm telling some obvious things, I'm just not sure how much experience with Transit you have).
There are two 'types' of dictionaries:
1) you click "Open Dictionaries" (the fifth icon in the top raw) - this dictionary will be called "TermStar...". This is NOT your project dictionary and - as you said - it is user-unfriendly:)
2) when you open a project, 5 windows ope

Dictionary window -- Thanks, Ewa Jan 11, 2006

Thanks for the clue. In fact, this window had somehow gone missing, and unfamiliar as I was with Transit, I didn't notice it. What I had open was the Termstar window -- which in fact displays the same dictionaries, but for editing, not for automatic searching.

I reinstalled Transit (maybe there would have been a simpler way to get the window back, but I'm not aware of it; just reopening the project didn't help).

Now the terms finally appear automatically.

Many thanks once again for your generous help, Ewa.

Inserting still doesn't work Jan 11, 2006

Thanks Ewa, I cannot really say I am, but I'm definitely glad automatik lookup works now. I still cannot insert the terms with either the shortcuts specified in the online Help (Alt+T and Alt+K + letter) or the menu command Edit/Insert term from dictionary (which is still greyed out). I know I'm beginning to look stupid...

I don't know if it has to do with the fact that I'm not translating but changing segments that are marked as translated (although I tried marking them untranslated and insertion still doesn't work).

But at least work is finally underway.

I don't know if it has to do with the fact that I'm not translating but changing segments that are marked as translated (although I tried marking them untranslated and insertion still doesn't work).

You're right. You can't use Alt+T if the segment is marked as translated. I recommend marking the translated segments in colour - it makes work easier (View-Colors For Segment Type).

As you said: mark the segment as 'Not Translated' (Edit-Segment Status-Not Translated), and when Transit asks you:
"Replace translated text in block with source language text?",
you need to choose YES.

The words which ARE in the dictionary will then be displayed in RED and you'll be able to use ALT+T. You will only be able to use Alt+T for the words in red.

Of course, I assume you know that when you want to use Alt+T the cursor must be placed on the given word in the target window. The target language window has to be the active one.
There is nothing else that comes to my mind...

And believe me, when everything works right, Transit is not so bad. Maybe 'he' can feel you don't like him and that's why he's teasing you:)

Good luck anyway,
E.

Oh, I see, that's what I didn't do because I only need to adapt certain terms within the translation, so replacing the translation with the source text is not really an option. But I'm glad we (or rather you) have sorted it out.

Maybe 'he' can feel you don't like him and that's why he's teasing you:)

This must be it; even a machine should have no difficulty in sensing my aversion to Transit. Maybe we'll get used to each other now that there's no other way...

Thanks for taking me by the hand, Ewa; I'll be glad to reciprocate should you ever take a peek at DéjàVu.
