One of the major challenges for peacebuilding in areas emerging from conflict is how to effectively engage young people in the kinds of activity that build the trust, reconciliation, stability and structures necessary for sustainable peace. By embracing youth as an integral part of the rebuilding and reconstruction process, societies emerging from conflict can promote participation for their young people. In Sierra Leone, where youth represent 60% of the population, and where many young people were involved as child soldiers in the 11-year civil war, the government has put into place a strategy to reintegrate young people and involve them in post-conflict activities. Through its Peacebuilding Cooperation Framework, the Sierra Leonean government has defined youth to be between the ages of 18-35, recognising that current 35-year-olds would have been around 18 when the conflict began, and should therefore benefit from the kinds of reintegration activities planned.Alongside such reintegration and engagement, there is also a need for income-generating initiatives involving young people. This not only improves family finances, but also enhances self-esteem, and enables youth to gain a place in the community and increased respect. Although in some countries young people make up the majority of the population, few funding initiatives in post-conflict areas focus on income-generation for youth, and their majority is not reflected in the political or economic make-up of the area.

Uno de los mayores retos para la construcción de la paz en zonas que salen de un conflicto es encontrar una forma efectiva de implicar a los jóvenes en el tipo de actividades que fomenten la confianza, la reconciliación y creen las estructuras necesarias para una paz sostenible. Al abrazar a la juventud como una parte integral en el proceso de reedificación y reconstrucción, las sociedades que salen de un conflicto pueden promover la participación de sus jóvenes. En Sierra Leona, donde los jóvenes representan el 60% de la población y a muchos de ellos se les convirtió en soldados, implicándoles en una guerra civil que duró 11 años, el gobierno ha creado un plan para reintegrar a los jóvenes e involucrarlos en tareas post-conflicto. A través de la Construcción de la Paz en el Marco de la Cooperación, el gobierno de Sierra Leona ha definido la juventud como la edad que comprende desde los 18 a los 35 años, reconociendo así, que los que ahora tienen 35 tendrían unos 18 cuando empezó el conflicto y por tanto, deberían beneficiarse de las diversas actividades de reintegración programadas.Junto a la reintegración y el compromiso, también existe la necesidad de crear iniciativas para generar ingresos que involucren a los jóvenes. De este modo, no sólo mejora la economía familiar, sino que además aumenta la autoestima y permite que los jóvenes consigan un lugar en la comunidad y sean más respetados. A pesar de que en algunos países los jóvenes constituyen la mayoría de la población, existen pocas iniciativas de financiación en las zonas de post-conflicto que se centren en generar ingresos para los jóvenes, y el hecho de que sean mayoría no se ve reflejado en las decisiones políticas y económicas de la zona.

I have a passion for languages and that is why I studied linguistics and Spanish at Birbeck College, University of London, where I was taught the principles of translation. After six years working and studying in London, I came back to Barcelona and took a Spanish teacher training course at International House, and a course on teaching Spanish as a second language for illiterate students at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. After a few years working for two major Spanish schools, I joined for a year the Eduqual Foundation where I worked on their quality education projects as a secretary, translator and interpreter. Since then, I became a Spanish private teacher and combine this job with some freelance translation work. Recently, I have taken a course on translation into Spanish at International House to improve my skills as a translator.
