Translation - English A Cuban offers himself puts on view, for the first time ever, the larger assortment of documentary photography made in the island between 1970 and 1984; best series, essays an images from those years are presented here, chosen under historical criterion. Title of the exhibit comes after photographer Iván Cañas´ series of the same name, since it resumes natural gracefulness of most Cubans in front of a camera.
Observer will discover prevailing aesthetic lines in vogue by then, through artists and series at the sample -both of them paradigmatic of the visual tendencies at that time; as well as unpublished and forgotten images from the whole seventies. The collection shows -on an inaugural approach-, a wide variety of styles in documentary photography, far beyond so called revolutionary epic from the sixties (Korda, Corrales, Salas, Noval), widely known world scale.
Selected images, more than seventy of them in the black and white technique, have the additional value of a truthful document, while revealing authors´ ideas and principles across the related period of time, starting by the unsuccessful Zafra de los Diez Millones (Ten Millions Tons of Sugar Harvest) (1970), including the formal merging of Cuba to the mostly european socialist block of countries and Mariel massive migration events (1980). In terms of artistic culture, the collected works get to the year of the First Havana Biennial and Third Latin-American Meeting on Photography (1984), events which pushed the far-reaching aesthetic renovation in this field, as part of the Cuban New Art.
Instants caught in this exposition – gathered as a whole in premiere- show ordinary Cubans on their everyday places and attitudes, offering a non-epic, common dimension of the revolutionary Cuba, with it´s social concerns. Proposal could be summarized in five thematic zones: the arise of the popular subject; the sugar harvest –myth and found of the isle economy since the XVIII century; relationship between citizen and national symbols
-political, religious and historical ones; Cuban military presence in Angola and massive exodus in 1980, when dozens of thousand left the island to the United States.
Rooted on a centenary tradition –born in1840, just after introduction of photography in the greater isle of the Antilles, A Cuban offers himself could be defined by it´s succinct language -formal and technically talking;
a classical and perfectionist notion on the subject of framing an themes; as well as a cautious exploration over avant-garde ruptures.
Produced by request of leading national publications, also as a result of free-lance makers labor; shaped in the midst of Havana noising streets, or under the risk of the military graphical reporting, images on this exhibit offers a realistic, accurate mirror of the Cuban people during an almost forgotten and hardly illustrated period of the XX century second half.

Bio
Hello and thank you for your time.
Even though I´m a 47 years old Specialist on Design and Projects graduate on Physical Geography from University of Havana, my mastery on English -via living abroad and as graduate from Abraham Lincoln Languages School in Havana, had turned me into a permanent translator since my student years. Both as an unpaid assistant and as a professional, I have translated millions of words in the varied fields related herein. Also as an amateur writer and Art lover, I have translated some literary works, exhibit profiles and catalogues, as the photography collection called A Cuban offers himself..., by curators from the Cuban National Museum of Arts; one of my Spanish poems translated into English as Fragile Pleasure, won his insertion in 1996 to the anthology book Daybreak of the Land and declamatory series The Sound of Poetry, by the National Library of Poetry of the United States.
From now on, recently retired because of personal reasons, I´m ready to dedicate all my time to translation activities working at home.
Thank you very much for reading.
