And if you want trees in your yard to be assets that continually appreciate in value, keep these important tips from the International Society of Arboriculture in mind before, during, and after planting a tree.
·Time of year -the best time to plant trees is during the dormant season, in the fall after leafdrop or early spring before bud-break. Weather conditions are cool and allow plants to establish roots in the new location before spring rains and summer heat stimulate new top growth.
·Tree selection - Think right tree, right place. Believe it or not, many people don't take tree growth into consideration when choosing what species to plant. Think about how the tree will look 50 years from now as well as this planting season. Consider its mature height, width, and overall shape before making your final choice.
·Site selection - choose a location with the right soil, space, and light conditions for your tree. Will your tree need shade or sun? Wet soil or dry? What insects, pollutants, drought conditions, or other environmental factors might affect its long-term viability? Avoid planting large trees under or near power lines. Also remember that tree roots spread well beyond their branches; so pick a planting spot with plenty of room for underground development, too.

Proper planting techniques are critical to the life of a tree. All too often, people make their first and biggest planting mistake when they dig the hole that will be their tree's home. "Most of a tree's roots grow horizontally, so the hole needs to be wide," said ISA's Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the organization.
A good rule of thumb is to dig the hole about three times the width of the root ball. The depth of the hole is just as crucial; dig the hole no deeper than the height of the root ball. "It's better to put a $100 tree in a $200 hole than to put a $200 tree in a $100 hole," Skiera said, because a properly prepared planting hole will help the tree's root system establish more quickly. "Healthy roots make healthy trees."
Other ISA tips are: loosen the soil around the planting hole to give tree roots ample room to grow; straighten the tree in the hole before refilling with soil; fill the hole gently but firmly; and mulch the base of the tree. After planting, keep the soil moist but not soaked; check soil moisture once a week (more often in hot weather); and prune sparingly and only when necessary. CHAMPAIGN, IL- Mulching is one of the most beneficial things a homeowner can do to keep trees healthy - it makes growing situations more "friendly" for trees in general. But over-mulching can be one of the worst landscaping mistakes you can make, causing significant damage to trees and other plants.
"All things in moderation should be a homeowner’s mulching motto," says Jim Skiera, Executive Director of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). "As beneficial as mulch is, too much can be harmful in more ways than one."
The generally recommended mulching depth is 2 to 4 inches, according to the ISA. When applied properly, mulch helps maintain soil moisture, control weeds, improve soil structure, and inhibit certain plant diseases. Mulch also protects plants and trees from "weed whacker" damage and "lawnmower blight" in addition to giving planting beds a uniform, well cared-for look.
But too much mulch - be it layers deep or piled high against tree trunks - can cause major problems for homeowners, including:
·Excess moisture in the root zone, which causes plant stress and root rot;
·Insect and disease problems;
·Micro-nutrient deficiency or toxicity;
·Weed growth;
·Smelly planting beds, caused by anaerobic conditions and "sour" mulch;
·Habitat creation for rodents that chew bark and girdle trees.
Why mulch at all?
Urban landscapes are typically harsh environments with poor soil conditions, little organic matter, and big fluctuations in temperature and moisture - all "unfriendly" growing situations for trees. Mulching basics
To ensure the health of your trees and plants, follow these practical mulching tips to landscape, like the pros:
·For well-drained sites, apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of mulch. If drainage problems exist, use a thinner layer.
·If mulch is already present, check the depth. Do not add mulch if there is already a sufficient layer (2 to 4 inches) in place. Instead, rake the old mulch to break up any matted layers and refresh the appearance.
·Avoid placing mulch against the tree trunks.
·If mulch is already piled against the stems or tree trunks, pull it back several inches so that the base of the trunk and the root crown are exposed.
·Mulch out to the tree’s drip line or beyond if possible.
·Most commonly available mulches work well in most landscapes. Be mindful of the fact that some plants may benefit from the use of a slightly acidifying mulch such as pine bark.
·Organic mulches are preferable for their soil-enhancing properties. Be sure it is well aerated and composted to avoid sour-smelling mulch.
·Avoid using uncomposted wood chips that have been piled deeply without exposure to oxygen. Use composted wood chips instead, especially when they contain a blend of leaves, bark, and wood.
