Source text - French Selon Margot Badran, chercheuse à l'université de Georgetown, il est faux d'opposer un féminisme islamique et un féminisme laïque, qui seraient en conflit dans les pays musulmans. "Pionniers, les féminismes laïques qui ont émergé en Egypte et dans d'autres pays arabes ont toujours fait une place à la religion, explique-t-elle. Le féminisme égyptien, fondateur, était ancré à la fois dans le courant islamique réformiste et dans le nationalisme laïque. A côté des arguments formulés en termes nationalistes, humanitaires et démocratiques, le féminisme laïque (souvent appelé simplement féminisme) a utilisé des arguments islamiques pour justifier le droit des femmes à l'éducation, au travail et aux droits politiques."
Nouzha Guessous, membre de la commission chargée de la révision de la mudawana (code du statut personnel) au Maroc, fait le même constat : "L'opposition entre Occident et monde musulman, sur la question du féminisme, est quelque chose qui doit être combattu. Mais les spécificités culturelles doivent être prises en compte. C'est ainsi que le référentiel de l'islam a toujours été intégré par le féminisme marocain, plus par pragmatisme que par conviction d'ailleurs."
En France, des jeunes femmes, souvent voilées, veulent extirper les pratiques traditionnelles du religieux proprement dit. Elles remettent en question, au nom de l'islam, les mariages forcés, l'excision, les crimes d'honneur et les violences domestiques. Au risque de choquer les laïcs aussi bien que les intégristes, Malika Hamidi, coordinatrice du groupe European Muslim Network, affirme tranquillement : "Le Coran est porteur d'un message émancipateur, complètement compatible avec la revendication féministe." Certaines de ces jeunes femmes militent dans le Collectif des féministes pour l'égalité, qui rassemble des femmes musulmanes et non musulmanes. Il publie un journal qui a pris pour titre : Inch'Allah l'égalité !

In the name of Islam, they are calling into question forced marriages, circumcision, honour crimes and domestic violence. At the risk of shocking secularists as well as integrationists, Malika Hamidi, the coordinator of the European Muslim Network, says calmly: “The Qu’ran is the bearer of an emancipatory message, which is completely compatible with feminist arguments”. Some of these young women are active in the Feminist Collective for Equality, which counts both Muslims and non-Muslims as members. It publishes a newspaper with the title: Inch'Allah l'égalité!

Source text - French Adossés aux premiers contreforts des Alpes-Adossés aux premiers contreforts des Alpes-du-Sud, et protégés des vents froids, les villages perchés du Pays de Fayence dans le Var sont généreusement ouverts à la douceur de la Méditerranée. Il fait bon parcourir ces neuf villages, avant d’apprécier le Festival international de quatuors à cordes qui chaque soir investit l’un d’entre eux. Un accueil particulier attend les hôtes et donne à cet événement un charme et une ambiance très appréciés des quatuors invités.
Pour l’occasion, une offre spéciale d’hébergement «deux nuits achetées / une offerte» est proposée aux Festivaliers par les Offices de Tourisme.
Le 18e Festival de quatuors à cordes en Pays de Fayence fera souffler un « Vent d’est » qui a toujours été si généreux et bénéfique pour ce festival. Deux quatuors tchèques qui ont depuis longtemps une relation privilégiée avec le Festival seront invités : Talich et Kocian. D’autre part, les compositeurs de l’est de l’Europe seront particulièrement à l’honneur durant ce festival. The 18th Pays de Fayence String Quartet Festival will be full of the “Eastern promise” which has always been so welcome in the past. Talich and Kocian, two Czech quartets sharing a long and distinguished relationship with the festival, will be present, and composers from Eastern Europe will take centre stage at this year’s event. Joseph Haydn may have developed and refined the genre showcased at the festival on the borders of Austria, in Prince Esterhazy’s Hungary, but the Czech, Hungarian and Russian composers thrived more than a century later. Source text - Spanish Los pequeños restaurantes de Nueva York han pedido más tiempo para poder atender los requerimientos del Departamento de Salud en su lucha contra las grasas hidrogenadas, que causan la muerte al año de unas 500 personas en esta ciudad. El departamento de Salud analizó este lunes la iniciativa, planteada en septiembre, de convertir a esta ciudad en la primera de EE UU que prohíbe los alimentos cocinados con este tipo de grasas manipuladas artificialmente, propuesta que podría aprobarse en diciembre próximo. La medida que plantea el proyecto municipal se considera demasiado drástica y perjudicial por muchos pequeños restaurantes de la ciudad, como aseguraron este lunes representantes de establecimientos de comidas. Luis Núñez, presidente de la Asociación de Restaurantes Latinos, explicó que, de un millar de propietarios que sondearon recientemente, 982 no sabían a qué se estaban refiriendo cuando se hablaba de grasas hidrogenadas. "Tenemos un gran problema. Y la ecuación es: normas, falta de información y multas. Una avalancha de multas llegará y queremos evitar que eso suceda", señaló Núñez, quien aseguró que la entidad que preside representa a unos 5.000 establecimientos en Nueva York.

On Monday the Department of Health evaluated the initiative, which was launched in September, and is aimed at making the city the first in the USA to ban food cooked in this type of artificially modified fat, a proposal which could be approved next December. Many small restaurants consider the methods used by the municipal authorities too drastic and harmful, as representatives of the restaurant sector claimed on Monday. Luis Núñez, president of the Latin Restaurants Association, explained that out of 1000 restaurant owners surveyed recently, 982 did not know what was referred to as a hydrogenated fat. "We’ve got a big problem. And the bottom line is: guidelines, a lack of information and fines. A tidal wave of fines will come, and we want to avoid that happening", said Núñez, who claimed that the body he leads represents some 5,000 establishments in New York.
Small restaurant owners are asking the Department of Health to make a significant effort to explain the alternatives available and for the transition phase to be longer, and say that they are also in favour of improving nutritional health. In September the New York authorities announced their determination to ban restaurants from using hydrogenated fats and also to lay down standards so that consumers are clearly informed of the number of calories food contains.

Source text - Spanish Los elefantes son capaces de reconocer su propia imagen ante un espejo, como ya se había descubierto que pueden hacer simios y delfines, además de los hombres. Según el estudio, realizado por científicos de la Universidad Emory de Atlanta (EEUU), esta capacidad demostraría que los enormes paquidermos pueden llevar a cabo tareas sociales relativamente complejas.
El estudio, que publica esta semana la revista 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' (PNAS), asegura que el hecho de reconocer la propia imagen ante un espejo está considerado un signo de tener conciencia propia, algo hasta ahora sólo reservado a los humanos y nuestros parientes más cercanos: los simios. Hace ya unos años un grupo científico estableció que los delfines también eran capaces de reconocerse al ver su imagen proyectada en un espejo, así que los elefantes son la cuarta especie animal que, sostienen, entra en esta prestigiosa categoría.
Según los científicos, los animales que poseen esta característica la expresan en cuatro fases. la primera de ellas es dar una respuesta social al ver su imagen en un espejo. A continuación, viene la inspección física del propio cuerpo, una acción que se suele materializar mirando detrás del espejo. Luego vienen los comportamientos por imitación y por último la realización de verse a sí mismos. Según los científicos, en el caso de los elefantes muchos de estos comportamientos se ven favorecidos por el hecho de tener una trompa "que les permite tocar o señalar casi cualquier parte de su cuerpo", como podrían hacer humanos o simios con las manos, pero que difícilmente pueden hacer los delfines.

The study, published this week in 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' (PNAS), emphasises that being able to recognise one’s own reflection in a mirror is considered to be a sign of possessing self-awareness, a trait hitherto only attributed to humans and our closest relatives: apes. Several years ago, a group of scientists concluded that dolphins are also able to recognise their own reflection in a mirror, so elephants are the fourth species believed to belong to this prestigious club.
According to the scientists, this characteristic is expressed in four stages. Firstly, there is a social response, and then comes a physical inspection of one’s own body, something which usually involves looking behind the mirror. Thirdly, animals express imitational behaviour, and finally realise that they can see themselves in the mirror. The scientists believe that the elephants’ trunk makes several of these different types of behaviour easier because it “allows them to touch or indicate almost any part of their body”, as humans and apes can do with their hands, but dolphins find difficult.

"Reculez, reculez", hurle un officier, face à la cohue qui se presse devant lui. Les femmes passent sans limite d'âge. Le sort des hommes est lié à la date de naissance inscrite sur leur carte d'identité. "J'ai 37 ans, c'est foutu pour moi, dit Abou Yazam, un fonctionnaire drapé dans une belle jalabeya blanche. La semaine dernière, j'avais pu rentrer à Jérusalem en marchant cinq kilomètres dans les collines. Mais aujourd'hui ça ne passe pas. Les soldats sont partout. Israël veut vider la mosquée Al-Aqsa de tous les croyants et placer l'esplanade sous sa tutelle."
Un audacieux se faufile dans le dos des soldats. Il est aussitôt rattrapé par le col et repoussé sans ménagement derrière les barrières. Un autre Palestinien tourne en rond, le visage furibard. Women pass regardless of their age, but the men must have their date of birth checked on their ID cards. “I’m 37, so I’ve got no hope,” says Abu Yazam, a civil servant wrapped in an attractive white jalabeya. “Last week I managed to get into Jerusalem after walking three miles through the hills. One daring man gets behind the army line, but he is soon grabbed by the collar and dumped unceremoniously back behind the barriers. Another Palestinian whirls round, his eyes ablaze. “I’ve got the Jerusalem pass and the right to get through,” he says, fingering prayer beads. “But a soldier took it off me after I protested about their behaviour. They’re animals. If I was armed, I think I’d kill him.”
The lucky ones who are allowed into the terminal are huddled together against metal gates. Overhead there is an electronic sign where the word “Welcome” glows. The queues and the time it takes to check their papers mean they have almost no chance of arriving in time for the prayer.

I completed a Masters in Translating and Interpreting at the University of Salford, UK in 2006, graduating with distinction, after which I have completed a six-month placement with a translation company in France.
I believe my translations are idiomatic and accurate, and consider my use of English and grammatical knowledge to be particular strengths, helped by a background in English language teaching. My work is concise but also creative. I also bring a very careful eye for detail to proofreading and editing work.
My specialisms are politics and sociology (my first degree was in politics), telecoms and ICT, tourism, sports and leisure and literature.
