Source text - English A significant development for larger newspapers lies in the use of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) to manage newspaper trunking. Here the distribution manager uses satellite based tracking systems to monitor plot routes and monitor traffic levels. Distribution trucks are redirected according the levels of their load and the most appropriate routing.
The Swedish Göteborgs-Posten embarked on a new approach to distribution about three years. Exploiting the Arc info and RouteSmart software they are able to plan and up-date their delivery routes on a daily basis.
According to Fredrik Lundberg, head of distribution at the newspaper: “To get the system to work we also have a digital map with all kinds of information that is needed.
“When we are starting to work with an area we tell the system how many hours we want every district (one district = one paperboy). Then the system tells us the resources we we need for any area. We can go back and set another time or we can also tell that we want a specific number of district.
“In the next step the system gives the optimal geographic classification. We can also, if we want, move a part or all of a street from one district to another.”
In the final step the system tells us the optimal route for each district.
“By implementation of the system we have been much more flexible. We can quickly change an area if we want. Our goal is that we will "look over" the whole area once a year with only two people working with the system. If we haden´t have this system we should have 25 persons working with that.
“To-date our savings of the salaries to our paperboys is around 10%. We haven't done our whole area yet and we save about 900.000 Euro every year.”
