Source text - English We were talking about some of the older castles in Tourraine and we touched upon the iron cage in which Louis VI imprisoned Cardinal Ballou for six years, then upon oubliettes and such horrors. I had seen several of the latter, simply dry wells thirty or forty feet deep where a man was thrown to wait for nothing; since I have such a tendency to claustrophobia that a Pullman berth is a certain nightmare, they had made a lasting impression. So it was rather a relief when a doctor told this story—that is, it was a relief when he began it for it seemed to have nothing to do with the tortures long ago.
There was a young woman named Mrs. King who was very happy with her husband. They were well-to-do and deeply in love but at the birth of her second child she went into a long coma and emerged with a clear case of schizophrenia or “split personality.” Her delusion, which had something about the Declaration of Independence, had little bearing on the case and as she regained her health it began to disappear. At the end of ten months she was a convalescent patient scarcely marked by what had happened to her and very eager to go back into the world.
She was only twenty-one, rather girlish in an appealing way and a favorite with the staff of the sanitarium. When she became well enough so that she could take an experimental trip with her husband there was a general interest in the venture. One nurse had gone into Philadelphia with her to get a dress, another knew the story of her rather romantic courtship in Mexico and everyone had seen her two babies on visits to the hospital. The trip was to Virginia Beach for five days.
It was a joy to watch her make ready, dressing and packing meticulously and living in the gay trivialities of hair waves and such things. She was ready half an hour before the time of departure and she paid some visits on the floor in her powder blue gown and her hat that looked like one minute after an April shower. Her frail lovely face, with just that touch of startled sadness that often lingers after an illness was alight with anticipation.
“We’ll just do nothing,” she said. “That’s my ambition. To get up when I want to for three straight mornings and stay up late for three straight nights. To buy a bathing suit by myself and order a meal.”
When the time approached Mrs. King decided to wait downstairs instead of in her room and as she passed along the corridors with an orderly carrying her suitcase she waved to the other patients, sorry that they too were not going on a gorgeous holiday. The superintendent wished her well, two nurses found excuse to linger and share her infectious joy.
“What a beautiful tan you’ll get, Mrs. King.”
“Be sure and send a postcard.”
About the time she left her room her husband’s car was hit by a truck on his way from the city—he was hurt internally and not expected to live more than a few hours. The information was received at the hospital in a glassed-in office adjoining the hall where Mrs. King waited. The operator, seeing Mrs. King and knowing that the glass was not sound proof, asked the head nurse to come immediately. The head nurse hurried aghast to a doctor and he decided what to do. So long as the husband was still alive it was best to tell her nothing, but of course she must know that he was not coming today.
Mrs. King was greatly disappointed.
“I suppose it’s silly to feel that way,” she said. “After all these months what’s one more day? He said he’d come tomorrow, didn’t he?”
The nurse was having a difficult time but she managed to pass it off until the patient was back in her room. Then they assigned a very experienced and phlegmatic nurse to keep Mrs. King away from other patients and from newspapers. By the next day the matter would be decided one way or another.

Ne avevo viste diverse, semplici pozzi secchi profondi trenta o quaranta metri dove un uomo veniva gettato ad aspettare il nulla; mi erano rimaste impresse, visto che ho una propensione alla claustrofobia tale da rendere una cuccetta Pullman un vero e proprio incubo. Mi sentii quindi sollevato quando un medico raccontò questa storia, cioè fu un sollievo quando la iniziò, perché sembrava non avere nulla a che fare con le torture di tanto tempo prima.
C'era una giovane donna chiamata signora King che era molto felice con suo marito. Erano benestanti e profondamente innamorati, ma alla nascita del secondo figlio entrò in un lungo coma e ne uscì con un chiaro caso di schizofrenia o "doppia personalità". Il direttore le fece gli auguri, due infermiere trovarono una scusa per soffermarsi e condividere la sua contagiosa gioia.
«Che bella abbronzatura avrà, signora King».
«Mi raccomando, mandi una cartolina».
Proprio mentre lasciava la stanza, l'auto del marito fu investita da un camion proveniente dalla città: l'uomo era ferito internamente e si prevedeva non sarebbe sopravvissuto per più di qualche ora. La notizia arrivò in ospedale in un ufficio vetrato adiacente alla sala dove la signora King aspettava. L'operatore, vedendo la signora King e sapendo che il vetro non era insonorizzato, chiese alla caposala di raggiungerlo immediatamente. La caposala, sconvolta, corse subito da un medico per decidere cosa fare. Finché il marito era ancora vivo era meglio non dirle nulla, ma naturalmente doveva sapere che oggi non sarebbe venuto.

Source text - English In the somnolent July afternoon the unbroken line of brown stone houses down the long Brooklyn street resembled an army massed at attention. They were all one uniform red-brown stone. All with high massive stone stoops and black iron-grille fences staving off the sun. All draped in ivy as though mourning. Their somber façades, indifferent to the summer’s heat and passion, faced a park while their backs reared dark against the sky. They were only three or four stories tall—squat—yet they gave the impression of formidable height.
Glancing down the interminable Brooklyn street you thought of those joined brownstones as one house reflected through a train of mirrors, with no walls between the houses but only vast rooms yawning endlessly one into the other. Yet, looking close, you saw that under the thick ivy each house had something distinctively its own. Some touch that was Gothic, Romanesque, baroque or Greek triumphed amid the Victorian clutter. Here, Ionic columns framed the windows while next door gargoyles scowled up at the sun. There, the cornices were hung with carved foliage while Gorgon heads decorated others. Many houses had bay windows or Gothic stonework; a few boasted turrets raised high above the other roofs. Yet they all shared the same brown monotony. All seemed doomed by the confusion in their design.
Behind those grim façades, in those high rooms, life soared and ebbed. Bodies crouched in the postures of love at night, children burst from the womb’s thick shell, and death, when it was time, shuffled through the halls. First, there had been the Dutch-English and Scotch-Irish who had built the houses. There had been tea in the afternoon then and skirts rustling across the parquet floors and mild voices. For a long time it had been only the whites, each generation unraveling in a quiet skein of years behind the green shades.
But now in 1939 the last of them were discreetly dying behind those shades or selling the houses and moving away. And as they left, the West Indians slowly edged their way in. Like a dark sea nudging its way onto a white beach and staining the sand, they came. The West Indians, especially the Barbadians who had never owned anything perhaps but a few poor acres in a poor land, loved the houses with the same fierce idolatry as they had the land on their obscure islands. But, with their coming, there was no longer tea in the afternoon, and their odd speech clashed in the hushed rooms, while underneath the ivy the old houses remained as indifferent to them as to the whites, as aloof . . .
Her house was alive to Selina. She sat this summer afternoon on the upper landing on the top floor, listening to its shallow breathing—a ten-year-old girl with scuffed legs and a body as straggly as the clothes she wore. A haze of sunlight seeping down from the skylight through the dust and dimness of the hall caught her wide full mouth, the small but strong nose, the eyes set deep in the darkness of her face. They were not the eyes of a child. Something too old lurked in their centers. They were weighted, it seemed, with scenes of a long life. She might have been old once and now, miraculously, young again—but with the memory of that other life intact. She seemed to know the world down there in the dark hall and beyond for what it was. Yet knowing, she still longed to leave this safe, sunlit place at the top of the house for the challenge there.
Suddenly the child, Selina, leaped boldly to the edge of the step, her lean body quivering. At the moment she hurled herself forward, her hand reached back to grasp the bannister, and the contradiction of her movement flung her back on the step. She huddled there, rubbing her injured elbow and hating her cowardice. Slowly she raised her arm, thin and dark in the sun-haze, circled by two heavy silver bangles which had come from “home” and which every Barbadian-American girl wore from birth. Glaring down, she shook her fist, and the bangles sounded her defiance with a thin clangor. When her arm dropped, the house, stunned by the noise, ceased breathing and a pure silence fell.
She smiled, for this was the silence she loved. It came when the old white servant upstairs slept amid her soiled sheets, when her father read and napped in the sun parlor, her sister slept in their basement bedroom and the new tenant Suggie was out. Above all, it was a silence which came when the mother was at work.
She rose, her arms lifted in welcome, and quickly the white family who had lived here before, whom the old woman upstairs always spoke of, glided with pale footfalls up the stairs. Their white hands trailed the bannister; their mild voices implored her to give them a little life. And as they crowded around, fusing with her, she was no longer a dark girl alone and dreaming at the top of an old house, but one of them, invested with their beauty and gentility. She threw her head back until it trembled proudly on the stalk of her neck and, holding up her imaginary gown, she swept downstairs to the parlor floor.
At the bottom step she paused in the entrance hall, which was a room in itself with its carpet, wallpaper and hushed dimness. Opening off the hall was the parlor, full of ponderous furniture and potted ferns which the whites had left, with an aged and inviolate silence. It was the museum of all the lives that had ever lived here. The floor-to-ceiling mirror retained their faces as the silence did their voices.
As Selina entered, the chandelier which held the sunlight frozen in its prisms rushed at her, and the mirror flung her back at herself. The mood was broken. The gown dropped from her limp hands. The illusory figures fled and she was only herself again. A truculent face and eyes too large and old, a flat body perched on legs that were too long. A torn middy blouse, dirty shorts, and socks that always worked down into the heel of her sneakers. That was all she was. She did not belong here. She was something vulgar in a holy place. The room was theirs, she knew, glancing up at the frieze of cherubs and angels on the ceiling; it belonged to the ghost shapes hovering in the shadows. But not to her. As she left, her shorts, bagging around her narrow behind, defined her sadness.
She made only a cursory tour of the master bedroom next door, opening the drawers to smell the lavender amid the seldom-used things, running a finger along the fluted edges of the high bed in which she had been born— the only piece of furniture they had brought with them. Whenever she was sick enough to have the doctor she slept there. Then the mother put on sheets that smelled of lavender and her father brought her up through the hall and laid her gently down. And it was always like falling out of herself into its soft depth . . .
Going downstairs to the basement she leaned against one of the highback chairs ranged solemnly around the table in the dining room. Her eyes reflected the stained-glass wisteria lamp, the special crystal in the china closet and the family photograph, which did not include her, on the buffet. She wanted suddenly to send up a loud importunate cry to declare herself, to bring someone running. With the impulse strong in her she burst into the bedroom she shared with her sister.
Her sister, Ina, lay under the sheet, her body limp in sleep and her tight-clustered curls glistening. Watching her, Selina felt an inexplicable resentment. It flowed out from her, across the room, finally penetrating Ina’s sleep. Ina opened her eyes, suddenly, apprehensively, awake.
“Whaddya want?” she cried. “Go away.”
Selina bared her teeth and drew closer.
Ina scrambled up, gathering the sheet around her. “You heard what Mother said. You’re not to bother me today. I’m sick,” she cried from behind the sheet, shying away from Selina as though she embodied all that was rough and loud and undisciplined in the world.
Selina, remembering the mother’s admonition, stopped, rubbed her sneaker on her leg and glared.
Ina was thin but soft, passing gracefully through adolescence, being spared its awkwardness. But she seemed somehow defenseless because of this—as though she would never really be fit for the roughness of life. Sensing this softness, Selina said, “You were sure ugly as a baby. Didja ever take a good look at yourself in that picture on the buffet? You were sure ugly.”
The fear eased from Ina’s face at the frailty of her attack. “Go away, pestilence, you’re not to bother me when I have my pains.” She was deeply involved with the changes taking place in her body and loved giving herself up to them, matching the summer heat with the blood-heat of her body. She had no patience with Selina and her boy’s shape. Her voice stiffened with sarcasm now. “Look who’s talking about somebody being ugly as a baby! You were ugly then, you’re uglier now and you’ll get worse. There!” And laughing, she rolled over and burrowed her face in the pillow.
Outrage clogged Selina’s throat. She wanted to leap on Ina, pin her to the bed and then ground her fists and knees in that softness until the tears came and the whimpers and the apologies, until her own anger drained from her. But behind the blur of her tears she knew there was nothing she could do— for Ina was sick with some mysterious thing that made her unassailable.
Outside in the dining room she tried to swallow the impotence that was like hardened phlegm in her throat, and the room, like a dark, fragrant mother tried to soothe her. But she would not be comforted. She snatched up the family photograph from the buffet and stared at it bitterly in the scant light.
It was her father, mother, Ina and the brother she had never known. The picture of a neat, young family and she did not believe it. The small girl under the drooping bow did not resemble her sister. The young woman in the 1920’s dress with a headband around her forehead could not be the mother. This mother had a shy beauty, there was a girlish expectancy in her smile. Then there was the baby on her lap, who stared out at Selina with round blank eyes. His hair capped his head like fur and his tiny fists held tightly onto nothing.
“He’s like a girl with all that hair,” she muttered contemptuously. He had been frail and dying with a bad heart while she had been stirring into life. She had lain curled in the mother’s stomach, waiting for his dying to be complete, she knew, peering through the pores as the box containing his body was lowered into the ground. Then she had come, strong and wellmade, to take his place. But they had taken no photographs . . .
Her father was the only one she believed in the picture. Despite the oldfashioned suit and the spats, it was her father. The angle at which he held the cane, his detached air, the teasing smile proclaimed him. For her, he was the one constant in the flux and unreality of life. The day was suddenly bright with the thought of him upstairs in the sun parlor, and slamming down the photograph she bounded from the room, taking the steps two at a time.

Le cupe facciate, indifferenti al caldo e alla passione dell’estate, si affacciavano su un parco, mentre i retri si innalzavano scuri contro il cielo. Avevano solo tre o quattro piani – tozzi – eppure davano la sensazione di essere formidabilmente alte.
Guardando giù verso l’interminabile strada di Brooklyn, si poteva pensare che quelle case marroni si fossero fuse in un’unica casa riflessa attraverso una serie di specchi, in cui non c’erano muri tra le case, ma solo ampie camere spalancate all’infinito una dentro l’altra. Eppure, guardando da vicino, si poteva vedere che sotto la fitta edera, ogni casa aveva qualche peculiarità distintiva. Qualche tocco gotico, romanico, barocco o greco trionfava in mezzo al disordine vittoriano. Qui, colonne ioniche incorniciavano le finestre mentre dei gargoyle guardavano aggrottati il sole dalla porta accanto. Più in là, i cornicioni pendevano con del fogliame intagliato mentre le teste di gorgone ne decoravano altre. Molte case avevano finestre a golfo o opere murarie gotiche; alcune torrette si ergevano vantandosi sopra gli altri tetti. Eppure, condividevano tutte la stessa monotonia marrone. Dietro quelle cupe facciate, in quegli ambienti alti, la vita aleggiava e tramontava. I corpi rannicchiati in atteggiamenti amorevoli di notte, bambini emersi dallo spesso guscio del grembo materno, e morti, quando arrivava il momento, trascinati attraverso le stanze. Inizialmente, erano stati gli olandesi-inglesi e gli scozzesi-irlandesi a costruire le case. C’erano stati thè nel pomeriggio e gonne che frusciavano tra i pavimenti in parquet e voci dolci. Per lungo tempo c’erano sati solo i bianchi, ogni generazione che si srotolava in una tranquilla matassa di anni dietro le tende verdi.
Ma ora, nel 1939, gli ultimi di loro stavano morendo con discrezione dietro quelle tende o stavano vendendo le case per trasferirsi. E una volta lasciate, gli indiani occidentali iniziarono lentamente ad avanzare. Arrivarono come un mare nero che si fa strada verso spiagge bianche macchiando la sabbia. Gli indiani occidentali, soprattutto i barbadiani che non avevano mai posseduto niente ad eccezione forse di pochi poveri acri in povere terre, amavano quelle case con accanita idolatria, come se il terreno si trovasse nella loro oscura isola. Una luce offuscata che filtrava dal lucernario tra la polvere e la penombra della sala afferrò la sua ampia bocca carnosa, il naso piccolo e forte, gli occhi incassati nell’oscurità della sua faccia. Non erano gli occhi di una bambina. Qualcosa di maturo si celava nelle pupille. Sembravano appesantiti da scene di una vita lunga. Era come se fosse stata grande una volta e ora, miracolosamente, di nuovo giovane – ma con la memoria della vita precedente intatta. Sembrava conoscere il mondo per quello che era, lì sotto la sala buia e anche oltre. Pur conoscendolo, desiderava comunque lasciare quel posto sicuro e soleggiato in cima alla casa in cerca di una sfida là fuori.
Improvvisamente la bambina, Selina, con il corpo magrolino tremolante, balzò coraggiosamente verso la cima della scalinata. Nel momento in cui si lanciò in avanti, la mano tornò ad afferrare la ringhiera, e la contraddizione del suo movimento la fece indietreggiare sui gradini. Si rannicchiò lì, sfregando il gomito ferito e odiando la propria codardia. Alzò lentamente il braccio, magro e scuro nella penombra, ornato da due pesanti braccialetti d’argento provenienti da “casa” che ogni ragazza americana-barbadiana indossava dalla nascita. Guardando a terra, agitò il polso e i bracciali suonarono con leggero fragore la sua ribellione. Una volta calato il braccio, la casa, stordita dal rumore, cessò di respirare e cadde in un puro silenzio.
Sorrise, amava quel silenzio. Calava quando la vecchia domestica bianca del piano superiore dormiva tra le lenzuola sporche, quando suo padre leggeva e si riposava in veranda e sua sorella dormiva nella stanza del seminterrato, e quando la nuova inquilina Suggie era fuori. Soprattutto, quel silenzio calava quando sua madre era a lavoro.
Si alzò, le braccia si sollevarono in segno di benvenuto, e subito la famiglia bianca che prima viveva lì, quella della quale la vecchia signora del piano superiore parlava sempre, planò con pallidi passi in cima alle scale. Le mani bianche scorrevano sulla ringhiera; imploravano con voce lieve di dargli un po’ di vita. E mentre si affollavano intorno, fondendosi con lei, non era più una ragazza nera sola e sognante in cima a una vecchia casa, era una di loro, investita dalla loro bellezza e raffinatezza. Gettò indietro la testa finché non sentì un fremito orgoglioso sulla base del collo e reggendo il suo abito immaginario, si trascinò al piano di sotto dove stava il salotto.
Si fermò all’ultimo gradino dell’ingresso, il quale era una stanza a sé, con i propri tappeti, carta da parati e sommessa penombra. L’ingresso dava sul salotto, pieno di mobili pesanti e felci in vaso che i bianchi avevano lasciato, con un silenzio invecchiato e inviolato. Lo specchio lungo tutta la parete conservava i loro visi, così come faceva il silenzio con le loro voci.
Appena Selina entrò, il lampadario che intrappolava la luce nei suoi prismi si scagliò contro di lei, e lo specchio la fece tornare sé stessa. L’incantesimo fu spezzato. Il vestito cadde dalle sue deboli mani. Le figure illusorie svanirono e lei tornò ad essere solamente sé stessa. Volto truculento e occhi troppo grandi e vecchi, un corpo piatto arroccato su gambe troppo lunghe. Camicetta alla marinara strappata, pantaloncini sporchi e calzini che scivolavano sempre nel tallone delle sue scarpe da ginnastica. Questo era tutto ciò che era. Non apparteneva a quel posto. Era un qualcosa di volgare all’interno di uno spazio sacro. La stanza apparteneva a loro, lo sapeva, alzando lo sguardo verso il fregio con cherubini ed angeli sul soffitto; apparteneva a quelle sagome di fantasmi che fluttuavano nell’oscurità. Non a lei. Quando lasciò la stanza, i pantaloncini, che impacchettavano il sottile didietro, descrivevano la sua tristezza.
Fece solo un rapido tour nella camera padronale, aprendo i cassetti per sentire l’odore di lavanda fra gli oggetti usati sporadicamente, facendo scorrere un dito lungo le scanalature dei bordi dell’alto letto nel quale era nata: l’unico mobile che avevano portato con sé. Dormiva là ogni volta che era abbastanza malata da dover chiamare il medico. La madre metteva le lenzuola che profumavano di lavanda e suo padre la portava in braccio per la stanza e la coricava dolcemente. Ed era sempre come sprofondare in un soffice abisso…
Scendendo nel seminterrato, si appoggiò ad una delle sedie con schienale alto solennemente disposte intorno al tavolo nella sala da pranzo. I suoi occhi riflettevano la lampada in vetro color glicine, il cristallo speciale nella vetrinetta, e la fotografia di famiglia, nella quale lei non compariva, sul tavolo da buffet. Improvvisamente voleva lanciare un forte importuno grido per annunciare sé stessa, per far accorrere qualcuno. Con forte impulso, entrò nella camera che condivideva con sua sorella.
Sua sorella, Ina, era coricata sotto le coperte, con il corpo mezzo addormentato e i luccicanti riccioli raggruppati saldamente. Guardandola, Selina sentì un inspiegabile risentimento. Fuoriusciva da dentro di lei, attraverso la stanza, fino a penetrare il sonno di Ina. Di colpo, Ina aprì gli occhi con apprensione, sveglia.
«Che vuoi?» gridò. «Vai via».
Selina digrignò i denti e si avvicinò.
Ina si dimenò, raccogliendo le lenzuola intorno a lei. «Hai sentito cosa ha detto Madre. Non devi infastidirmi oggi. Sto male», esclamò da sotto le lenzuola, fuggendo da Selina come se incarnasse tutto ciò che era brutto, rumoroso e indisciplinato in questo mondo.
Selina, ricordando le ammonizioni della madre, si fermò, strofinò le scarpe da ginnastica sulla gamba e osservò.
Ina era magra ma morbida, stava attraversando elegantemente l’adolescenza, essendo stata risparmiata dal disagio che ne deriva. Per questo, però, sembrava in qualche modo indifesa – come se non potesse essere veramente pronta alle difficoltà della vita. Avvertendo questa morbidezza, Selina disse, «Eri davvero brutta da bambina. Ti sei mai guardata nella fotografia sul tavolo da buffet? Eri davvero brutta».
Alla debolezza del suo attacco, la paura nel viso di Ina diminuì. «Vai via, peste, non devi infastidirmi quando ho le mie cose». Era intensamente impegnata con i cambiamenti in atto nel suo corpo e amava arrendersi a loro, abbinando il caldo dell’estate con il calore nel suo sangue. Non sopportava Selina e il suo corpo da maschio. Adesso la sua voce si era rafforzata con sarcasmo. «Guarda chi sta parlando di bambini brutti! Tu eri brutta da bambina, sei ancora più brutta ora e andrai a peggiorare. Ecco!» e ridendo, si girò e rintanò la faccia nel cuscino.
La rabbia serrò la gola di Selina. Voleva saltare addosso ad Ina, bloccarla a letto per poi affondare i pugni e le ginocchia in quella tenerezza finché non avesse pianto, singhiozzato e chiesto scusa, finché non avesse scaricato tutta la rabbia che aveva in corpo. Ma oltre all’offuscamento delle sue lacrime, sapeva che non poteva fare niente – perché stava male per qualcosa di misterioso che la rendeva inattaccabile.
Fuori, nella sala da pranzo, provò ad ingoiare l’impotenza che era come catarro indurito nella sua gola, e la stanza, come una mamma nera profumata, cercò di calmarla. Ma non si sentì confortata. Afferrò la fotografia di famiglia dal tavolo da buffet e la fissò amaramente nella debole luce.
Erano suo padre, sua madre, Ina e il fratello che non aveva mai conosciuto. Era la fotografia di una normale giovane famiglia, e lei non ci credeva. La bambina con un fiocco pendente non assomigliava a sua sorella. La giovane donna che indossava un vestito degli anni ‘20 con una fascia intorno alla fronte non poteva essere sua madre. La madre nella fotografia aveva una timida bellezza, c’era un’aspettativa femminile nel suo sorriso. C’era un bambino in braccio a lei, che fissava Selina con occhi bianchi e rotondi. I suoi capelli coprivano la testa come pelliccia e il suo piccolo pugno si stringeva forte attorno al nulla.
«Sembra una ragazza con tutti quei capelli», borbottò sprezzantemente. Aveva sofferto ed era morto per problemi al cuore mentre lei veniva portata alla luce. Lei giaceva rannicchiata nella pancia della madre, aspettando l’arrivo della morte del fratello, lei sapeva, sbirciando attraverso i pori mentre la cassa contenente il suo corpo veniva calata nel terreno. Poi arrivò lei, forte e ben fatta, a prendere il suo posto. Ma non avevano scattato nessuna fotografia…
Il padre era l’unico a cui credeva nell’immagine. Nonostante il completo vecchio stile e le ghette, era suo padre. Lo dimostravano l’angolatura con cui teneva il bastone, l’aria distaccata, il sorriso beffardo. Per lei, suo padre era l’unica costante nel flusso e nell’irrealtà della vita. La giornata divenne improvvisamente luminosa al pensiero di lui al piano di sopra in veranda, sbattendo la fotografia uscì dalla stanza, salendo i gradini due alla volta.
