Neuro-linguistic programming and application in treatment of phobias
The DSM-IV defines a phobia as the experience of ‘unreasonable fear or anxiety in connection with exposure to specific objects or situations’ often leading to a disproportionate urge to avoid the feared object. Phobias can be separated into three categories. Specific phobia (previously known as simple phobia) can be subdivided into five types; fear of animals e.g. arachnophobia, fear of the natural environment e.g. hydrophobia (fear of water), situational fear e.g. claustrophobia or fear of flying, and blood injection injury phobia e.g. fear of needles. The fifth category is named ‘other’ and includes phobias that do not fit into the above four categories, e.g. fear of situations which may cause illness. Specific phobia has a lifetime prevalence of 12.5%
The second category of phobia is social phobia which is a fear of social situations and can be further subdivided into generalised social phobia and specific social phobia in which fear is only triggered in particular situations such as public speaking. The third category of phobia is agoraphobia which is fear and anxiety in crowded spaces. Phobias are an extremely prevalent problem worldwide. A study by theNational Institute of mental health has revealed phobias to be the most frequently occurring mental disorder amongst women of all age groups, and the second most prevalent disorder in men over the age of twenty-five years. Current statistics approximate that there are over ten million adults suffering from phobias in the United Kingdom today, and between 8.7% and 18.1% of the population in the United States. Phobias can be extremely debilitating as avoidance of fear triggers can limit quality of life and in the case of some specific phobias such as dental phobia, can have serious consequences for the individuals health | Translation - Persian (Farsi)

تعریف DSM-IV از فوبیا : " ترس بدون دلیل یا اضطراب مرتبط با قرارگیری در معرض یک چیز یا یک موقعیت خاص" اغلب منجر به یک خودداری شدید از رویارویی با آن می شود. فوبیا به سه دسته تقسیم می شود. فوبیا خاص (پیش تر با نام فوبیا ساده شناخته شده است) می تواند به پنج نوع دسته بندی شود؛ ترس از حیوانات مانند، آراکنوفوبیا (ترس از عنکبوت)، ترس از محیط طبیعی مانند هیدروفوبیا (ترس از آب)، ترس های موقعیتی مانند تنگناترس (ترس از محیط های بسته و محصور) یا ترس از پرواز و فوبیای ترس از خون، تزریق و جراحات خونی مانند ترس از سوزن (آمپول). دسته آخر "دیگر" فوبیاها نام گرفته است و شامل فوبیاهایی می شود که در چهار دسته بالا قرار نمی گیرند به عنوان مثال ترس محیطی که ممکن است منجر به بیماری شود. فوبیا خاص یک دوره ای اثرگذاری 12.5 درصدی دارد.
