I est bien précise qu'il s'agira de traduction automatique pure sans relecture ou révision.
Les « traductions » que vous souhaitez acheter étant, par définition, effectuées dans des langues étrangères, if ne VOUS sera pas possible de juger de la qualité de l'image que vous souhaitez montrer au monde non-francophone. En revanche, les lecteurs étrangers risquent de se sentir vexes (voire insultes) par cette tentative du ministère de la Culture d'un multilinguisme au rabais.
Notre préoccupation va au-delà de la défense de nos intérêts corporatistes. C'est en tant que citoyens et parties prenantes de la vie culturelle française que nous souhaitons éviter a la France, et au ministère de la Culture en particulier, de devenir la risée de pays étrangers. Notre argument est simple : la traduction automatique est totalement inadaptée a votre projet. We at the SFT (French Society of Translators) and ATLF (French Association of Literary Translators) were surprised to discover that your offices issued a call for tenders to machine translate your ministry’s website in eight different languages. Furthermore, it is stated this will be unedited machine translation without further proofreading or revisions to it.
As the “translations” that you wish to purchase will be executed in foreign languages you will, therefore, not be able to fully appreciate the quality of the image you wish to present to the non-French-speaking world. However, foreign readers might feel offended (even insulted) by this cheap attempt at multilingualism by the Ministry of Culture.
Our concern goes beyond our professional interest. It is as citizens and stakeholders in French cultural life that we wish to protect both France and the Ministry of Culture from public ridicule on the international stage. Our argument is simple: machine translation is completely inadequate for your project. People who only speak one language may find its low-cost and speedy output attractive. However, machine translation is in no way capable of rendering the myriad nuances of the original text.
This is why, machine translation’s only valid uses are “internal” (to get the gist of a message and not to deliver a “dumbed down” version of the message).
One of your staff members at the Ministry told us, by way of example, that Google’s own machine translator was rather good. So we took the liberty of having this letter translated into English by a professional and then have it translated back into French by Google. Please find a copy attached.

Antananarivo est une ville bâtie sur les collines, toute en dénivelés. Rouler là-bas consiste donc à monter ou descendre des rues souvent très étroites. Le parc automobile est constitué, pour l’essentiel, de voiture de « millionnaires ». En kilomètres parcourus s’entend ! La plupart sont des 2 CV, des 4 L ou des Peugeot 203. Pour le visiteur français de plus de 40 ans, c’est un vrai voyage dans le temps : il y retrouve les rues de son enfance. Un vrai rassemblement de voitures anciennes. La raison en est évidente : Madagascar est pauvre. Alors on se débrouille…et on dérouille. Les voitures sont rafistolées encore et encore, tant que la caisse ne tombe pas en poussière. Aussi, tant que le synthofer, les soudures et le fil de fer permettent de maintenir l’impression de voitures en état de rouler, elles roulent. Et la sécurité ? la sécurité est un luxe, un rêve; d’ailleurs, ici, personne n’y songe. Quant à l’entretien, il n’est pas tout ; il faut aussi remplir le réservoir. Ce qui n’est pas simple, lorsque souvent, l’on n’a pas de certitude le matin qu’on aura de quoi manger le soir..
Aussi, pour économiser l’essence, les malgaches ont développé, depuis des décennies, une technique inédite de conduite : la "voiture lancée". Le principe est simple. Il consiste à lancer la voiture puis à couper le moteur. La voiture est alors en roue libre, exploitant les lois de la gravité et de l’inertie pour parcourir le plus de chemin possible sans l’intervention du moteur.
Le passager se retrouve alors dans une voiture silencieuse (hormis un vrai concert de couinements divers), qui « vole » dans les descente puis "atterrit" sur les plats, l’expérience du conducteur permettant d’exploiter chaque millimètre possible avant de relancer le moteur. Bien sûr, dans les montées, il faut faire tourner l’engin. Mais au 1 er feu, chacun tourne la clé. Moteurs éteins, ce sont encore quelques micro-grammes d’essence économisés. Toujours ça de pris. Antananarivo is a city built on a series of hills of different altitudes. Driving here consists of going up and down very narrow streets and most of the drivers are “millionaires” in the sense that their cars have driven millions of miles. The majority of these cars are old Citroën 2 CV, Renault 4 and Peugeot 203s. For French visitors over 40 it’s like traveling back in time to the streets of their childhood: a real antique car show. The reason for this lies in the economy of Madagascar: the island is poor, so its people have to get creative to get by. Cars are patched up over and over again until they disintegrate. Because, as long as some sealant, wire and welding can give the illusion that they are working, they are driven. And what of safety you might ask? Safety is a luxury, a distant dream and nobody seriously considers it an option. Maintenance apart, the other issue facing the Malagasy is how to fill the tank. Especially, when you don’t know today if you’ll be able to afford food tomorrow.
This is where the “car in motion” technique comes in to play. This unusual approach to driving was developed decades ago by the people of Madagascar in order to save fuel. The main principle behind it is simple: start the car, then once you are moving, cut off the engine. Using gravity and inertia, you then try to freewheel as far as possible before having to turn the engine on.
The driver’s experience enabling him to make the most out of every inch before turning the key again, the passenger then finds himself flying down the hill then landing on flat roads in an almost silent car (apart from the symphony of screeching and whistling). The engine must of course be turned on to go uphill but it is then quickly turned off at the first traffic lights to save a few more drops of gas. Every little bit helps and eventually adds up to a few gallons.
Just as cigarettes are sold by the unit, gas is sold by the side of the road in quarter gallon bottles or less. Many cars must be pushed to make it to the so called “gas stations” as it is difficult to guess what is left in the tank when the gas gauge has long been broken. If it’s a taxi, their understanding clients help push their cars too.

Los golpes terroristas de los últimos días y semanas en suelo europeo suponen un salto cualitativo que no se puede minimizar. El yihadismo se ha cebado en diferentes puntos de la Tierra —Bagdad, Kabul, Mogadiscio—, pero la novedad es que ya afecta a Alemania y mantiene una tensión sostenida en Francia, países decisivos en Europa y con elecciones previstas el año que viene. Por eso las democracias no deben caer en la tentación de la explotación política de los atentados. Ni el Estado Islámico ni Al Qaeda —si es que son los responsables de la estrategia criminal— tienen capacidad para desestabilizar a Europa, a menos que el continente rompa sus consensos y se vea instrumentalizado por partidos extremistas.
Francia lleva ocho meses en estado de excepción y su Parlamento se ha visto obligado a prorrogarlo por otros seis. En ese contexto, y dada la existencia de un fuerte movimiento de extrema derecha, es incalculable la siembra de terror que supone el asesinato de un sacerdote octogenario en la iglesia de un pueblo normando. No solo por la psicosis de inseguridad que alimenta, sino por la perversidad del ataque —inmediatamente condenado desde otras confesiones, la musulmana la primera— a un templo católico.
La sociedad resiste contra el terror más de lo que parece, como lo demostró la española en tiempos pasados. With the terrorist attacks that took place in recent days and weeks, the situation in Europe has undoubtedly been taken to a new level. Jihadism first tasted blood in different parts of the Globe like Bagdad, Kabul and Mogadishu. What is new, however, is that it is now affecting Germany, and keeps France under a state of constant ttension. Both countries are major decision makers in Europe and have elections planned for next year. This is why democracies shouldn’t allow terrorist attacks to be exploited for political ends. Neither the Islamic State nor Al Qaeda, if they are responsible for this criminal strategy, can destabilize Europe. That is unless, Europe breaks its consensus and becomes the pawn of extremist parties.
France declared a state of emergency eight months ago and its parliament has been forced to extend it another six months. There is also the presence of a strong right wing movement to consider. In this context, one cannot underestimate the impact that the murder of an eighty-year-old priest in the village church in Normandy can have. It spread mass panic, both because it fed into the existing fear of insecurity and because of the depravity of an attack directed at a catholic symbol itself. (The attack was immediately condemned by representatives of other faiths, Muslims first.)
As demonstrated by the Spanish, societies can withstand terror better than expected. However, by targeting random locations from a music festival in a small Bavarian town to a usually quiet “Promenade des anglais” in Nice, this wave of attacks is creating a climate of fear. This cannot be considered retaliation for the war against ISIS because these attacks affect both countries like France, with a record of military intervention in the Caliphate, as well as, Germany which has remained relatively far from the armed conflicts in the Middle East.

El arte del tejido en México prehispánico alcanzó un alto nivel de desarrollo, y sus orígenes se remontan a varios milenios antes de nuestra era. A causa de su origen orgánico, los tejidos son materiales que se destruyen con facilidad y sólo en raras ocasiones logran conservarse. En Mesoamérica, a diferencia de zonas como el área andina o Egipto, muy pocas veces se dan las condiciones climáticas adecuadas que permitan la preservación de esta clase de materiales; debido a esto el muestrario de tejidos arqueológicos que se conserva es mínimo y sólo en casos excepcionales se encuentran piezas que guardan aún su forma y dimensiones originales. Así, cada nuevo hallazgo, por pequeña que sea, tiene gran importancia para nuestro conocimiento en este campo, pues si bien existen otras fuentes, como las relaciones de cronistas, cerámica, murales y diversos aspectos que sobreviven en grupos indígenas actuales, hay elementos importantes que sólo pueden conocerse mediante el estudio directo del material textil.
La mayor parte de los tejidos arqueológicos preservados procede de cuevas secas, sobre todo del norte de México, debido a que estos sitios presentan excelentes condiciones para la conservación de material orgánico, aunque desafortunadamente una gran parte de estos materiales son producto de saqueo y se carece, por lo tanto, de datos que permitan situarlos cronológica y culturalmente.
Es interesante que numerosos fragmentos de tejido hayan llegado hasta nosotros gracias a una circunstancia especial: su asociación con objetos de cobre, pues los productos de corrosión de este material actúan como agentes esterilizadores a causa de su acción fungicida y bactericida, con lo que evitan la destrucción de material orgánico que se encuentra en contacto con él.

Textiles became highly evolved in pre-Columbian Mexico and their origins can be traced back thousands of years before our era. Due to their organic nature, textiles are easily destroyed and only on rare occasions can they be preserved. Unlike in Egypt or the Andean region, we rarely encounter in Mesoamerica the right climatic conditions for the preservation of these types of material. This is why the collected sample of archeological textiles is negligible; and only in exceptional cases do the items still hold their original shape and size. So every new find, no matter how small, is of great importance for our understanding of this field. A variety of aspects can still be observed among contemporary indigenous groups and there are other resources available like reports of chroniclers, pottery and murals. However, there are important elements that can only be understood through the direct study of the textile material.
Most preserved archeological textile pieces come from dry caves and mostly from the North of Mexico because these locations offer excellent conditions for the preservation of organic pieces. Regrettably, many of these textiles were obtained by looting, and therefore, lack any helpful data that could help us situate them chronologically or culturally.
It is worth noting that most of these textile fragments were able to reach us because of one unique condition: their close contact with objects made out of copper. The products of corrosion formed on copper act as sterilizing agents thanks to their antifungal antifungal and antibacterial properties. This, in turn, prevents the decomposition of organic material in contact with copper.
