We can only be effective healers if we can heal ourselves. As part of this process it is important to give ourselves a full Reiki treatment every day for the first thirty days follow- ing the First Degree training. By doing this, we adjust mentally and physically to the new energy we carry and it helps us become a clearer channel
for Reiki.
You will recall Dr. Usui’s first two treatments
were upon himself: when he stubbed his toe run- ning down the mountain, and when he was able to eat a large meal after a long fast without becoming ill. These self-healings are very symbolic and should teach us not to be in a rush to “heal the world” but to nourish and develop ourselves well if we are to help others effectively.

The Way of Reiki
Some people will feel able to give Reiki treatments to others immediately after their First Degree attunements. Reiki comes from a limitless source and does not deplete, but generally increases our own energy levels. The process of becoming a pure Reiki channel is continuous and can involve periods of inner cleansing that require rest and self- treatment. Each Reiki practitioner has to assess his or her own requirements and with experience you will be able to judge when it is appropriate to receive rather than give. Receiving can be an act of giving if our motivation is to benefit others. If our real motivation is good, and we have to be very clear and honest with ourselves about this, then our actions will naturally benefit others, even if they some- times appear to be selfish.
When we give Reiki to others we also receive as much as we need. If we feel ready to treat others on a regular basis, after an appropriate time of self-treatment, then this can really accelerate, enhance, and deepen our own growth and development. The longer we continue this practice, along with self-treatment and receiving Reiki from others, the greater our understanding and experience of the way of Reiki will become. This process can also be enriched and supported through regular Reiki Exchanges with other practitioners, perhaps once a month, or more frequently according to your needs.
Intention and Dedication
The quality of our intention directly affects the results of our actions. If we give ourselves Reiki with the wish that everyone benefit from it, then this will create much greater

positive energy than if we only wish for our own benefit. If this greater energy is also sincerely dedicated, then sooner or later it will come back to us as a very positive experience and achieve excellent results for everyone. To make the most of a self-treatment, we should set a positive intent before we begin and dedicate when we have finished.
To set our intent, we simply think—at the start of the treatment—of those areas of our lives that we wish to heal, change, or gain clarity on, or again we can set clear specific intents. Our intents can be as great and all-encompassing as we wish. We can also bring to mind specific people we may wish to help, for example we could think:
May this treatment benefit, my children, my parents, my partner, the rest of my family, friends, and neigh- bors (you can mention them by name), everyone in this town, city, and country, everyone on this continent, planet, and all living beings for their greatest good.
There is no need to constantly reaffirm our intent once we have set it, as this will not increase the power of Reiki and may prevent us relaxing fully and receiving what we need. However, sometimes it may feel right to meditate more deeply on our intentions throughout the treatment. Again knowing when to do this will come with experi- ence. When you wish to do this it may help to sit up in a meditation posture while treating yourself (see chapter 9 for basic meditation techniques). When the treatment is over, we dedicate by thinking of a specific goal or general purpose to which we mentally direct the positive energy we have created through using Reiki. Again the best inten- tions and dedications are simple, honest, and straight from the heart.

Breaking Negative Thought Patterns
By treating ourselves regularly, our health and positive qualities naturally improve. We become more peaceful and less likely to react negatively to difficult situations. This peace also brings an inner confidence and strength, and an increased awareness of our natural talents and abilities. We also become more mentally and emotionally aware and able to recognize our negative thought patterns, and our power to transform them improves, enabling us to become less of a slave to our bad habits!
In short, our mental health improves and, as we find the courage to change ourselves and our lives, we begin to feel good about who we are, where we are, and what we are doing. Regular self-treatment can also act as a preventative health measure. It is well known that reduced stress levels and a sense of well-being can have a positive effect on our physical and mental health.
The Twelve Basic Positions
A full self-treatment lasts sixty minutes. There are twelve basic positions: we place our hands for five minutes in each position (see figures on pages 90–99). The basic positions correspond to the seven major chakras, or energy centers, of the human body. Although the energy will go to those areas of body and mind most in need, each hand position has a more specific effect. If you or someone you are treating has

issues they would like to address directly, it is useful to know which positions to spend more time treating (see chapter 8, pages 163–167, for more details).
If you stay in one position for longer than five minutes, you should still spend a full five minutes in each of the other positions, if you have time. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment with new positions that feel right and produce good results. After you have practiced Reiki for some time, try reversing the order of the twelve basic positions so that you are working up the body instead of down, as this can help release energy blocks. Also try using only those posi- tions that you feel need Reiki, for this can help us to devel- op intuitive wisdom and energy awareness. Increasing these abilities also gradually leads to a more subtle aware- ness and understanding of the mind, the key to all our problems and potential.
The Right Place and Time
Before beginning a self-treatment, create the right environ- ment. Give yourself a suitable period of uninterrupted time, perhaps early morning or evening, preferably at the same time every day. Some people are physically and men- tally energized by Reiki and others are left feeling relaxed and ready to unwind, so it is important to choose a time that fits your daily schedule. This reaction can be con- trolled to some extent by setting the appropriate intent, but it is better to work with the energy and your natural incli- nations, rather than against them.
Find a quiet room. Try to avoid potential distractions, by unplugging the telephone or letting an answering machine take your calls, and asking others not to disturb you during your treatment. This is your own time and it is important

to value yourself enough not to allow distractions. Have a blanket ready if you think you might get cold. Have relax- ing music playing if you enjoy it. You could place a pillow under your knees, as well as your head. This can help take the pressure off a back problem. A clock that is easy to see and that counts five-minute intervals is useful, as it is easy to lose track of time, or fall asleep. If you fall asleep before you have finished, this generally means you needed more Reiki in whatever position you fell asleep. Just carry on from where you left off and complete the treatment, if you have time.
During the Treatment
Keep your fingers and thumbs together, but not tightly. This concentrates the healing in one area and allows a smooth flow of energy. This way of gently stretching the fingers, especially the second or longest finger, stimulates the palm chakras. We can also stimulate the palm chakras by gently massaging the palms in a circular motion or by drawing a counterclockwise spiral in the air above them. Our palm chakras are quite sensitive to energy, so if you point the fingers of one hand at the palm of the other with- out touching it and move them in a circular or spiral motion, you may feel a tingling sensation or movement in the palm. Once you have taken the Reiki empowerments, you become more sensitive to energy and your own life- force energy level increases.
When giving yourself Reiki try to make each position as comfortable as possible by using pillows, cushions, and a blanket if necessary. Try not to break contact with your body while changing hand positions, as this restricts the

free flow of energy and interrupts the process of deep relax- ation. We can treat ourselves either lying down or sitting up—whichever enables you to cover all the positions com- fortably while staying relaxed. If you have weak arm mus- cles or a shoulder or neck injury, it is possible to do the first two positions lying on your side with a pillow between your elbows to support the arms. Roll over and change sides between the first and second position to allow the energy to balance and flow freely through your body and aura. Some of the back positions may be difficult to reach so you can either put your hands as close to the correct position as possible, or spend longer on the corresponding front position. Alternatively, do the front positions again and set a clear mental intention for the energy to go through to the back. Again this may be especially helpful for people with neck, shoulder, and back problems.
Self-treatment can be combined with other self-help tech- niques such as affirmations, visualizations, Aromatherapy, or Bach Flower Remedies. Experiment and enjoy finding the most effective combinations for you. Combining Reiki with crystals can be especially powerful, but be careful! Make sure you use the right crystals, in the right places, for the right purposes, by reading an appropriate book. However, don’t let this stifle your intuition. If you feel it is right to use a crys- tal in a particular way, try it. Remember that Reiki is a com- plete system of healing for body and mind; always trying something different can be a diversion from facing and deal- ing with our real issues. If you use Reiki regularly with an honest wish to “move on” you will receive all that you need and more in terms of healing and personal growth. However, if you are looking for something more, perhaps the best

compliment to Reiki is the practice of a recognized path of meditation or prayer. Meditation can enhance and deepen our use of Reiki as well as bringing us other special benefits!
Care After the Treatment and Continuing Self-Treatment
When your self-treatment is over and you have dedicated, get up slowly and take time to “ground” yourself. This allows your energies to balance and your mind to become clear before returning to daily activity. Rushing around directly after deep relaxation can leave you feeling vulnera- ble, light-headed, and even irritable. Everyone is different and it may take some people longer to come round after a treatment. If you feel particularly sensitive, vulnerable, or light-headed after a treatment, then just sit up for a while and set an intent like:
Balanced, centered, grounded, and fully protected.
This is also a good intent to use at any other time, espe- cially if your are going into a situation where you might be challenged by others. Also giving Reiki to your feet or fore- head may reduce dizziness. It is also good practice to wash your hands after a treatment, and a shower feels great if you have the time.
After the first thirty days, we do not need to do a full treatment every day, although many people continue this practice as they notice a difference if they reduce the time they spend with Reiki. If on some days you don’t have much time, then even a little Reiki is better than none. If you can make some regular time available every day for Reiki, perhaps twenty to thirty minutes if you are busy, give yourself a full treatment once or twice a week, then the

positive effects will be continuous and long lasting. If you only have a short time available for a general overall treat- ment just choose three positions; perhaps the back of your head, your heart, and hips, and do five minutes in each position. Set an intention to receive whatever you need, however you need it, during that time, always for your greatest good. Using this type of simple intention we can achieve surprisingly good results in only a short time.
Sometimes we may feel that we want to give ourselves a lot of Reiki perhaps many hours per day. This is fine for short periods of time, such as a few days or occasionally a few weeks. This can be especially useful in helping us deal with traumatic events like the end of a close relationship, bereavement, serious illness, etc. However, continuing this type of treatment for long periods can sometimes be a sub- conscious way of diluting the effectiveness of Reiki and using it as a crutch or as a way to avoid life, rather than as a powerful tool for inner healing and personal growth towards responsibility and maturity. This is one of the rea- sons why the one-hour twelve position treatment is so valuable. For First Degree practitioners, and many advanced practitioners, it is the most effective, efficient, and powerfully transforming way to use Reiki.
Só podemos fazer uma cura efetiva nos outros se pudermos curar a nós mesmos. Como parte desse processo, é preciso dá-lo a nós mesmos todos os dias, pelos trinta dias seguintes ao treinamento de Primeiro Grau. O Caminho do Reiki
Algumas pessoas se sentirão capazes a oferecer tratamentos de Reiki imediatamente após as harmonizações do Primeiro Grau. O Reiki vem de uma fonte ilimitada e não esgota, mas geralmente aumenta os nossos próprios níveis de energia. O processo de se tornar um canal de Reiki puro é contínuo e pode envolver períodos de limpeza interior que demandam descanso e auto-tratamento. Cada praticante do Reiki tem que saber avaliar as suas necessidades e saber dizer quando é hora de receber em vez de dar o tratamento. Receber pode ser um ato de doação se nossa motivação beneficiar aos outros. Se a nossa motivação real for boa, e temos que ser bem claros e sinceros quanto a isso, nossas ações naturalmente beneficiarão a outros, mesmos se elas às vezes parecerem egoístas.
Quando oferecemos o Reiki a outros, nós geralmente recebemos o quanto precisamos também. Se nos sentirmos prontos para tratar aos outros rotineiramente, após um tempo apropriado de auto-tratamento, então isso pode realmente acelerar, melhorar e aprofundar o nosso próprio crescimento e desenvolvimento. Quanto mais continuamos essa prática, aliada ao auto-tratamento e a receber tratamento de outros, maior será a nossa compreensão e experiência do caminho do Reiki. Esse processo também pode ser enriquecido e apoiado por Trocas de Reiki regulares com outros praticantes, talvez uma vez ao mês, ou mais frequentemente, de acordo com as suas necessidades.
Intenção e Dedicação
A qualidade da nossa intenção afeta diretamente os resultados das nossas ações. Se dermos o Reiki a nós mesmos com a intenção de que isso beneficie a outros, então isso criará uma

Energia positiva muito maior do que se apenas desejássemos o nosso próprio benefício. Se essa grande energia for sinceramente dedicada, cedo ou tarde ela retornará a nós como uma experiência muito positiva e trará ótimos resultados para todos. Para obter o máximo de um auto-tratamento, devemos estabelecer uma intenção positiva antes de começarmos, e dedicar quando terminamos.
Para estabelecer a nossa intenção, nós simplesmente pensamos – no começo do tratamento – nas áreas da nossa vida que queremos curar, mudar ou ganhar clareza, ou, novamente, podemos estabelecer intenções específicas. Nossas intenções podem ser tão boas e abrangentes quanto desejarmos. Podemos inclusive trazer à mente pessoas específicas que desejamos curar; como exemplo, podemos pensar:
Que este tratamento beneficie os meus filhos, os meus pais, meu companheiro, o resto da minha família, amigos, e vizinhos (você pode mencionar seus nomes), todos nesta cidade, e país, todos neste continente, planeta e todos os seres vivos, para o bem maior de todos.
Não há necessidade de reafirmar a nossa intenção repetidas vezes uma vez as tendo estabelecidas, já que isso não vai aumentar o poder do Reiki e pode fazer com que não consigamos relaxar totalmente e conseguir o que precisamos. No entanto, às vezes pode parecer correto meditar mais profundamente sobre as nossas intenções durante o tratamento. Mais uma vez, a sabedoria de quando fazer isso, virá com a experiência. Quando você desejar fazê-lo, é aconselhável sentar em postura de meditação enquanto você se trata (veja o capítulo 9 para técnicas de meditação básicas). Resumindo, nossa saúde mental aumenta e, conforme achamos a coragem para mudar a nós mesmos e às nossas vidas, começamos a nos sentir bem em relação a quem somos, onde estamos, e o que estamos fazendo. O auto-tratamento regular também pode funcionar como medida de saúde preventiva. É muito difundido que níveis de estresse reduzido e um sentimento de bem-estar podem ter um efeito positivos na nossa saúde mental e física.
As Doze Posições Básicas
Um auto-tratamento completo dura sessenta minutos. Há doze posições básicas: colocamos nossas mãos por cinco minutos em cada posição (veja as figuras nas páginas 90-99). As posições básicas correspondem aos chakras, ou centros de energia principais do corpo humano. Questões que quiserem abordar diretamente, é aconselhável saber quais posições passar mais tempo tratando (ver capítulo 8, páginas 163-167, para mais detalhes).
Se você permanecer em uma posição por mais de cinco minutos, você deve ainda ficar por cinco minutos inteiros nas outras posições, se você tiver tempo. Além disso, não tenha medo de experimentar posições novas que pareçam boas e produzam bons resultados. Após praticar o Reiki por um certo tempo, tente inverter a ordem das doze posições para que trabalhe o corpo em direção ao alto em vez de para baixo, pois isso ajuda a liberar blocos de energia. Também, tente apenas fazer as posições que precisam do Reiki, porque isso nos ajuda a desenvolver uma sabedoria intuitiva e consciência energética. O aumento dessas habilidades gradualmente leva a uma consciência e compreensão mais sutis da mente, a chave para todos os nossos problemas e potencial.
A Hora e o Lugar Certos
Antes de começar um auto-tratamento, crie a atmosfera correta. Permita-se um tempo ininterrupto e apropriado, talvez de manhã cedo ou à noite, preferivelmente no mesmo horário, todos os dias. Algumas pessoas se sentem energizadas pelo Reiki enquanto outras ficam relaxadas e prontas para dormir, portanto é importante encontrar um horário apropriado para a sua rotina. Essa reação pode ser controlada, de certa forma, ao se colocar uma intenção correta, mas é melhor trabalhar a favor das suas energias em vez de contra as suas inclinações naturais.
Encontre um ambiente silencioso. Tente evitar distrações potenciais, desligando o telefone ou deixando uma secretária eletrônica receber suas chamadas, e pedindo a outros que não perturbem o seu tratamento. Esse é o seu próprio tempo e é importante

valorizar a si próprio, ao não permitir distrações. Tenha um cobertor pronto se você achar que pode sentir frio. Ligue uma música relaxante, se desejar. Você pode colocar um travesseiro sob seus joelhos e sua cabeça. Isso pode auxiliar a retirar a pressão da coluna. Um relógio fácil de ver e que mostre cinco minutos é aconselhável, já que é fácil esquecer da hora, ou pegar no sono. Se você pegar no sono antes de terminar, isso geralmente significa que você precisava de mais Reiki na posição onde você pegou no sono. Apenas continue de onde parou e complete o tratamento se tiver tempo.
Durante o Tratamento
Mantenha seus dedos e dedões juntos, mas sem apertá-los. Isso concentra o tratamento em uma área e permite um fluxo suave de energia. Essa forma de esticar os dedos sutilmente, especialmente o dedo do medo, estimula os chakras das palmas. Podemos também estimulá-los massageando as palmas das mãos em movimentos circulares ou desenhando uma espiral anti-horário no ar sobre elas. Nossos chakras das palmas são bastante sensíveis à energia, então se você apontar os dedos de uma mão em direção à palma da outra mão sem tocá-la e movê-los em forma circular ou espiral, você talvez sinta uma sensção de formigamento ou movimento na palma. Uma vez recebidos os “apoderamentos” do Reiki, você se torna mais sensível à energia e a sua própria energia de força vital aumenta.
Ao se dar o Reiki, tente se colocar nas posições da forma mais confortável possível usando travesseiros, colchões e um cobertor, se necessário. Tente não quebrar o contato com o seu corpo ao mudar as posições das mãos já que isso restringe a

Fruição livre da energia e interrompe o processo de relaxamento profundo. Podemos nos tratar deitados ou sentados – qualquer opção que permita realizar todas as posições confortavelmente enquanto permaneça relaxado. Se os músculos de seu braço forem fracos ou você tiver uma lesão nos ombros ou pescoço, é possível fazer as primeiras duas posições deitando de lado, com um travesseiro entre seus cotovelos para apoiar os braços. Role e troque de lado entre a primeira e segunda posições para autorizar a energia a se balancear e fluir livremente pelo seu corpo e aura. Algumas posições das costas podem ser difíceis de alcançar, portanto você pode colocar suas mãos o mais próximo da posição correta possível, ou passar mais tempo na posição correspondente de frente. Ou mesmo, repita as posições frontais e estabeleça uma intenção mental clara para que essa energia flua para as suas costas. Novamente, essa instrução pode ser útil para pessoas com problemas de pescoço, ombros e costas.
O auto-tratamento pode ser combinado com outras técnicas de auto-ajuda como afirmações, visualizações, Aromaterapia, ou Florais de Bach. Experimente e aproveite a oportunidade de achar a combinação perfeita para você. A combinação do Reiki com os cristais pode ser poderosa, mas cuidado! Assegure-se de utilizar os cristais corretos, nos lugares corretos, para os propósitos corretos, lendo um livro apropriado. No entanto, não deixe isso encobrir a sua intuição. Se você achar certo usar um cristal de determinada forma, faça-o. Lembre-se que o Reiki é um sistema de cura completo para o corpo e a mente; sempre tentar algo novo pode ser um desvio ao nosso encontro com as nossas questões reais. Se você usar o Reiki regularmente com um desejo honesto de “seguir adiante”, você receberá tudo o que precisa e mais em termos de cura e crescimento pessoal. No entanto, se você estiver procurando algo a mais, talvez o melhor

complemento ao Reiki seja a prática de uma forma reconhecida de meditação ou oração. A meditação pode aumentar e aprofundar o nosso uso do Reiki assim como a nos ajudar a trazer benefícios especiais!
Cuidado Apos o Tratamento e
Auto-Tratamento Continuado
Quando o seu auto-tratamento tiver terminado e você tiver dedicado, levante-se devagar e tome um tempo para se “re-localizar”. Isso permite que as suas energias se balanceiem e que sua mente fique clara para voltar às atividades do dia-a-dia. Correr com pressa após um relaxamento profundo podem deixá-lo vulnerável, com tontura e até irritável. Todos são diferentes e algumas pessoas podem levar mais tempo para se estabilizar após um tratamento. Se você se sentir particularmente sensível, vulnerável ou com tontura após um tratamento, apenas se sente por um momento e estabeleça uma intenção como:
Balanceado, centrado, concentrado, e totalmente protegido.
Esta também é uma boa intenção a ser usada a qualquer momento, especialmente se você estiver se preparando para uma situação onde você pode ser desafiado por outros. Dar Reiki aos seus pés e à sua testa podem reduzir a sensação de tontura. É uma boa pratica, também, lavar as mãos após um tratamento, e um banho é ótimo se você tiver tempo.
Depois dos primeiros trinta dias, não precisamos fazer um tratamento completo todos os dias, apesar de muitas pessoas continuarem essa pratica, já que notam uma diferença se reduzem o tempo que passam com o Reiki. Se em alguns dias você não tiver muito tempo, então, mesmo um pouco de Reiki é melhor que nenhum. Se você puder disponibilizar um tempo diário para o Reiki, talvez vinte ou trinta minutos se você estiver ocupado, dê a si mesmo um tratamento completo duas ou três vezes por semana, assim

Os efeitos positivos serão contínuos e duradouros. Se você tem apenas pouco tempo para um tratamento geral, escolha três posições; talvez a parte posterior da sua cabeça, seu coração, os quadris, e faça cinco minutos em cada posição. Determine uma intenção para receber o que você precisa, do modo que precisa, durante esse tempo, sempre para o seu bem maior. Ao usar esse tipo de intenção simples, podemos alcançar, surpreendentemente, bons resultados em pouco tempo.
Às vezes pensamos que devemos nos dar muito Reiki, talvez por várias horas durante o dia. Isso é positivo por períodos curtos de tempo, por alguns dias, ou até algumas semanas. Isso pode ser especialmente útil para lidar com eventos traumáticos, como o fim de um relacionamento próximo, falecimentos, doenças graves, etc. No entanto, esse tipo de tratamento por longos períodos, pode ser uma forma subconsciente de diluição dos efeitos do Reiki, e de uso deste como muleta, ou forma de evitar a vida em vez de como instrumento poderoso de cura e crescimento pessoal para a responsabilidade e maturidade. I am a passionate for the languages and for learning. Therefore, I believe translating forms the perfect equation between using skills one has and learning new things. Find below some examples of some really interesting works I have done:
Interpreting (Italian-Portuguese) at the workshop "Criação e Sentidos" of Università dell’Immagine, Milan for Senac, design departament, in partnership with Natura and Symrise (2003).
Translating (English-Portuguese) a technical Engineering manual for Brazilian technology company DIMEP (2010).
Translating (English-Portuguese) of book "Reiki for beginners", written by David Vennells, originally published by Llewellyn’s Publications. A book about oriental therapy for Brazilian publisher Universo dos Livros (2009).
Translating (English-Portuguese) of book "An Interdisciplinary Study on The Ox and the Slave" (on ethnomusicology), written by lecturer at University of Kent, United States of America, Kazadi wa Mukuna (in preparation) (2011/2012).
Translating (Italian-English) of academic article "Giovanni Battista Lavagna, Vitruvius, and the reception of the Italian Treatises on Architecture in Sixteenth-Century Spain and Portugal", written by Universidade de São Paulo lecturer Prof. Mário Henrique Simão D'Agostino, presented by the author at The Renaissance Society of America Annual Meeting, Holland (2010).
I have an undergraduation in History at Universidade de São Paulo and a Master in Arts in Film Studies at the University of London (2009).
My proficiency level in English was granted by the British Council, after ten years of studies in Brazil (1991-2000), and my fluency was acquired after the completion of the Masters degree in Britain.
My Italian proficiency was acquired after one year and a half specialization at Università dell'Immagine, Arts, Creativity and Marketing course in Milan (2001/2002).
