'Moral panic' is a familiar term in academic studies of crime, deviance and the media. It refers to public and political reactions to minority or marginalized individuals and groups who appear to be some kind of threat to consensual values and interests. The social reaction is predominantly media-fuelled. The mass media - usually led by the press - will define a group or act as 'deviant' and focus on it to the exclusion of almost everything else. The concept of moral panic originated in british sociology in the 1970s with the publication of Stanely Cohen's Folk Devils and Moral Panics: The Creation of the Mods and Rockers.

Crimewatching the police.
When the police were first approached about co-operating with television producers on Crimewatch they were intially suspicious of the idea. However, Crimewatch UK has proved to be one of the most effective public relations exercises at the police's disposal. In fact, the benefits to them in terms of the warm feelings induced by watching the police and public working together to solve crimes arguably outweighs all other benefits of the programme. This is a fact clearly understood by the police, despite the threat by Greater Manchester Chief Constable, Mike Todd, to boycott the show. The producers of Crimewatch UK are at pains to point out that they maintain their autonomy from the police, but one of the main criticisms levelled at the programme is that they do not seek infromation from any other source and that the police have too much say in what gets broadcast.

Przedstawianie policji.
Kiedy producenci Crimewatch po raz pierwszy zaproponowali policji współpracę przy programie, policjanci byli dosć podejrzliwi. Niemniej Crimewatch okazał się jednym z najlepszych narzędzi kreowania wizerunku publicznego policji. Największą korzyścią płynącą z programu jest ocieplony obraz policji współpracującej ze społeczeństwem w rozwiązywaniu przestępstw. Policja doskonale to rozumie, chociaż w przeszłości dochodziło do konfliktów – przypomnijmy o groźbie naczelnika policji w Manchester, Mike'a Todda, który żądał bojkotu programu. Producenci Crimewatch UK podkreślają, że są niezależni od policji, choć i tak krytykuje się ich za to, że nie starają się o pozyskiwanie informacji z innych źródeł, a policja ma zdecydowanie za dużo do powiedzenia w kwestii wyboru materiałów do programu.

I am an enthusiastic translator who loves working with language. I am passionate about my work, be it a short text or a book translation. I enjoy challenging tasks.
I localise websites and software. I believe localizing user interface is as exciting as watching a thriller movie!
I am currently in the process of completing my postgraduate degree in software programming (Akademia Górniczo-Hutnicza in Kraków) which proves very helpful in technical translations.
I also specialise in media studies and other human sciences (history, religion etc.).
