Source text - English The real reason they had been escorted from Bristol, Richard decided here, lay more in the fact that the Bristol Newgate wanted its irons back tan cared about escaping prisoners. They were divested of every piece of iron they wore, Tom the bailiff gathering them to himself like a woman her new baby. As soon as all were accounted and signed for, he strolled off with his cargo in a sack to catch the cheap coach home. Leaving Richard and Willy to be put into fresh sets of the familiar locked fetters with a two-foot length of chain between. This deed done, a gaoler –they never saw the head gaoler himself- hustled them, carrying their previous boxes, to the castle.
What little of it was still habitable was such a crush of prisoners that sitting down with the legs stretched out was impossible. If theses wretches sat, it was with knees drawn up beneath their chins. The chamber was exactly twelve feet square and contained around thirty men and ten women. The gaoler who had escorted them bawled an incomprehensible order and everybody who had managed to find enough space to sit got to their feet. They then filed outside, Richard and a weeping Willy in their midst, still carrying their boxes, and came to a halt in a freezing yard where twenty more men and women already stood.
It was Sunday, and the complement of Gloucester Gaol were to receive God’s message from the Reverend Mr Evans, a gentleman so old that his reedy voice drifted into the winds eddying around the roughly rectangular space and rendered his words of repentance, hope and piety –if such they were- unintelligible. Luckily he considered that a ten-minute service and another twenty minutes spent sermonizing constituted adequate labour for the £40 per annum he was paid as prison chaplain, especially because he also had to do this on Wednesdays and Fridays.
After, they were herded back to the felons’ common-room, far smaller than that for debtors, of whom there were only half as many.
“It ain’t as bad as this Monday to Saturday,” said a voice as Richard put his box down by showing someone else out of the way, and sat on it. “What a lovely man ye are!”
She Squatted at his feet, elbowing those on either side of her roughly, a thin and stringy creature of about thirty years, clad in much-mended but reasonably clean clothes –black skirt, red petticoat, red blouse, black jerkin and an oddly cheeky black hat which sat with its wide brim to one side and bore a goose feather dyed scarlet.

Si estos miserables se sentaban, era con las rodillas dobladas bajo el mentón. La cámara tenía exactamente 12 pies por cada lado y contenía en torno a treinta hombres y diez mujeres. El guardia que les había escoltado ladró una orden incomprensible y todo el mundo que había conseguido encontrar el suficiente espacio para sentarse se puso de pie. Entonces fueron saliendo en fila. En medio de todos ellos Richard y, entre sollozos, Willy, quienes llevaban todavía las cajas, y se detuvieron en un patio congelado donde ya había veinte hombres y mujeres más.
Era domingo, y el suplemento dominical del presidio de Glocester era recibir la palabra de Dios del reverendo Evans, un caballero de tan avanzada edad que su voz quebrada se elevaba en el aire que se metía por el irregular espacio rectangular y hacía que sus palabras de arrepentimiento, esperanza y piedad –si eso es lo que eran- fueran incomprensibles. Por fortuna estimó que un servicio de diez minutos y otros veinte minutos dedicados a dar el sermón constituían un trabajo apropiado por las cuarenta libras anuales que se le pagaban como capellán de la prisión, particularmente porque tenía que hacerlo además miércoles y viernes.
Posteriormente fueron conducidos de vuelta a la sala común de los malhechores, mucho más pequeña que la de los morosos, que sólo eran la mitad.
No está tan mal como de lunes a sábado, exclamó una voz mientras Richard depositaba su caja, quitándose de en medio a quien se interpusiera en su camino, y se sentó sobre ella. ¡Qué hombre tan encantador sois!
Ella se puso en cuclillas, dando rudamente codazos a cualquiera que estuviera a su lado. Era una delgada y nervuda criatura de unos treinta años, vestida con unos ropajes remendados en demasía pero razonablemente limpios –falda negra, enaguas rojas, camisola roja, chaleco negro y un sombrero negro curiosamente osado con un ala doblada y una pluma de ganso teñida de carmesí.

Naciones Unidas, 26 jun (EFE). -La reforma del sistema financiero internacional necesaria para superar la crisis todavía está pendiente, por lo que se debe acometer cuanto antes y con la participación de la ONU, dijo hoy la secretaria de Estado de Cooperación Internacional de España, Soraya Rodríguez.
"Se han producido medidas de emergencia para garantizar que el sistema financiero internacional tenga viabilidad y no se hunda, pero la agenda de las reformas está pendiente y sigue siendo tan necesaria como en el momento de la explosión de los mercados", dijo en una conferencia de prensa Rodríguez. La secretaria de Estado de Cooperación Internacional encabeza la delegación del Gobierno español en la cumbre que hoy concluye y que desde el pasado miércoles se celebra en la Asamblea General de la ONU para analizar la crisis económica y financiera global.
Rodríguez calificó de muy positivo el documento final que los 192 países miembros del organismo mundial adoptarán hoy a la conclusión del encuentro. "Este documento habla con mucha claridad y valentía de los elementos que deben estar en la agenda para dar una solución a la crisis", apuntó. Señaló que el documento recuerda que sigue siendo necesaria la creación de nuevos marcos reguladores que aporten mayor control y transparencia a los mercados financieros.
El texto establece que "la ONU tiene un papel importante en el discurso económico y financiero de cara a la salida de la crisis", lo que no impide que se produzcan esfuerzos paralelos en otras instancias multilaterales, como el G-20, resaltó Rodríguez. Por ello, esta cumbre ha servido para superar las reticencias de algunos países a la presencia de Naciones Unidas en los debates económicos y financieros internacionales, indicó. La secretaria de Estado española expresó su discrepancia con algunas delegaciones y expertos, como el Premio Nobel de Economía Joseph Stiglitz, que abogan por la creación de nuevas entidades financieras y monetarias internacionales. "¿Tenemos que crear nuevos instrumentos? No, la ONU tiene la legitimidad suficiente para poder hablar por todos", resaltó.

The reform of the international financial system necessary to overcome the economic crisis is still pending, hence it should be tackled as soon as possible with the United Nations taking part, said Spain's Minister of International Cooperation, Soraya Rodríguez today.
Emergency measures aiming at ensuring that the international financial system keeps its visibility and does not collapse, have been set in motion, but the agenda for reforms is pending and is still so badly needed as when the markets collapsed" argued Soraya Rodríguez at a press conference.
The Minister for International Cooperation is heading the Spanish delegation at the Summit to analyze the world's economic and financial crunch, which has been held at the United Nations General Assembly since last Wednesday and that is ending today.
Ms Rodríguez described as highly positive the final document that with much clarity and courage the 192 member states from the international body are adopting at the end of the meeting today. "This document deals with the items that should be included in the Agenda in order to give an answer to the crisis", she further commented.
She highlighted that the document reminds us that it is still essential to create new regulatory frameworks to provide more monitoring and accountability to financial markets.
The declaration states that "The UN plays an important role in the economic and financial debate in the way out from the crisis", which does not prevent similar efforts by other multilateral bodies such as the G20, from taking place, stress Soraya Rodríguez. Thus, this summit has been helpful to overcome some countries' reluctancy to a United Nation's presence in the international economic and financial talks, she pointed out. The Spanish Minister of International Cooperation showed her disagreement with some delegations and pundits, such as the Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz, who are in favour of setting up new international financial and monetary institutions. "Do we have to design new instruments? The answer is no. The United Nations have enough levitimacy to speak for everybody," she stressed.

Comme pour les alléger, Claudine Kayitesi interrompt ces paroles sur un lent sourire, et ajoute: "Je suis contente d'être africaine, car sinon je ne pourrais être contente de rien. Lors de ma dernière visite, deux ans plus tôt, Claudine occupait l'ancienne maison de sa cousine, en compagnie d'une marmaille des environs, en haut d'un chemin abrupt sur la colline de Rugarama. Une maison en pisé, déjà très lézardée et couverte de tôle rouillée, mais entourée d'un magnifique jardin odorant, soigné de ses propres mains. Derrière, une cahute abritait les marmites et l'enclos d'un veau.
Depuis, les paysans de champs limitrophes sont sortis du pénitencier, en particulier l'assassin de sa soeur, qu'elle appréhende de croiser à la nuit tombée. Elle a donc été soulagée de quitter les lieux et de suivre, sur une autre parcelle, son mari Jean-Damascène, ancien camarade d'école primaire, au lendemain d'un mémorable mariage qu'elle se raconte ainsi: "Avec mon époux, on s'est reconnus il y a deux ans, on s'est d'abord échangé des paroles d'amitié, on s'est envisagés à la Nouvelle Année, on s'est accordés en juillet. Le mariage a été une fête grandiose, les choristes l'ont préludé en pagnes ornementaux, comme sur les photos; j'ai vêtu les trois robes traditionnelles, mon mari a caché ses mains dans les gants blancs, l'église a proposé son enclos et ses nappes, trois camionnettes transportaient la noce, des Fanta, du vin, du sorgho et des casiers de Primus, évidement. Como para quitarle hierro al asunto, Claudine Kayitesi interrumpe estas palabras con una lenta sonrisa y añade: "Estoy contenta de ser africana porque si no no lo estaría por nada. Pero en ningún caso estoy orgullosa. ¿Se puede estar orgulloso si se está avergonzado? Simplemente estoy orgullosa de ser tutsi. Eso sí. Absolutamente. Porque los tutsis debían desaparecer de la tierra y bien que estoy aquí todavía."
En el momento de mi última visita, dos años atrás, Claudine ocupaba la antigua casa de su prima en compañía de chiquillería de los alrededores, en lo alto de un camino abrupto sobre la colina de Rugarama. Una casa de adobe, bastante agrietada por aquel entonces y cubierta de chapa oxidada, pero rodeada por la fragancia de un magnífico jardín, que ella misma cuidaba. Detrás, una casucha albergaba las marmitas y el redil de un ternero.
Desde entonces, los campesinos de las tierras limítrofes han salido de la cárcel, en concreto el asesino de su hermana, con el que tiene miedo de cruzarse durante el anochecer. Por lo cual se sintió aliviada de dejar el lugar y de seguir a otra parcela a su marido Jean Damascène, antiguo compañero de escuela primaria, al día siguiente de una memorable boda que cuenta así: "En lo tocante a mi esposo nos volvimos a encontrar hace dos años, primero intercambiamos palabras de amistad, nos prometimos en Año Nuevo y nos casamos en julio. La boda fue una fiesta sublime, los del coro la iniciaron con vestimentas tradicionales, como en las fotos;vestí los trajes tradicionales, mi marido oculto sus manos con guantes blancos, la iglesia contribuyó con su recinto y sus manteles, tres camionetas transportaban a la comitiva, las Fantas, el vino, el sorgo y, obviamente, cajas de botellas de Primus." I am a native Spanish speaker with a fluent knowledge of English and French both written and oral. As my enclosed résumé shows, I have been preparing for a competitive exam to join the Spanish Foreign Office for the last six years. Part of the training consisted of translatingliterary texts from English and French into Spanish and vice-versa. I am acquainted with 19th and 20th century English literature, the film speech, English idioms as well as the particulars of British and American English.
As of my knowledge of Spanish I am an old-school journalist committed to both delicacy and precision when writing. I worked for 18 months as a copywriter and proofreader for a Spanish Charity website, created some banners and contacted regional newspapers so they would publish articles from our Communications Department. I had been previously employed by a Spanish Magazine centered on parent’s issues (education, leisure, tourism and so on) where I worked as a copywriter and a reporter, and dealt with some of the subscribers. Finally I want to express my interest in bringing my cultural background to the mix. I am used to deadlines, to write starting from scrap and to display a team-working attitude.
Besides I am persistently obsessed with details so that, once translated, a text can be read smoothly and the beams are hidden to the common eye.
