Teacher education systems also vary with regard to their specificity. In some countries,
initial teacher education takes a fairly general form and allows teachers to move across
different levels of education, different subjects or different types of schools. For example,
under the reforms introduced in Sweden in 2001 there are now substantial common
elements for all teachers from pre-school to upper secondary school. Systems that offer
more specialised teacher education pathways qualify teacher trainees for particular types of
schools. In some countries, such as Germany, quite different teacher education programmes
exist for primary education, for academic upper secondary education, for vocational
education and for teaching students with special needs. The French Community of Belgium
offers an interesting hybrid model in primary and lower secondary teacher education:
although there are different routes into teaching in different types of schools, they share a
common framework through a curriculum organised around a teacher profile with 13 broad
competencies common to all courses.

Sistemi obrazovanja nastavnika razlikuju se takođe i po svojoj specifičnosti. U nekim državama početno obrazovanje nastavnika ima prilično opštu formu i dozvoljava nastavnicima da podučavaju različite predmete na različitim nivoima obrazovanja ili različitim tipovima škola. Na primer: nakon reformi sprovedenih u Švedskoj 2001. godine, sada postoji znatan broj zajedničkih elemenata kod svih nastavnika, od predškolskog do srednjoškolskog obrazovanja. Sistem koji nudi uže specijalizovane puteve obrazovanja nastavnika kvalifikuje pripravnike za određene tipove škola. U nekim zemljama, npr. u Nemačkoj, postoje dosta drugačiji programi obrazovanja nastavnika za osnovno obrazovanje, za akademsko srednjoškolsko obrazovanje, za stručno obrazovanje i podučavanje učenika sa posebnim potrebama. Francuska zajednica u Belgiji nudi zanimljiv hibridni model u osnovnom obrazovanju: iako postoje različiti načini za dobijanje zvanja nastavnika za različite tipove škola, svi oni dele isti okvir kurikuluma koji se bazira na nastavničkom profilu sa 13 opštih kompetencija zajedničkih za sve kurseve.
