Source text - Russian В области ребусов, шарад, шарадоидов, логогрифов и загадочных картинок пошли новые веяния. Работа по- старинке вышла из моды. Секретари газетных и журнальных отделов "В часы досуга" или "Шевели мозговой извилиной" решительно перестали брать товар без идеологии. И шока 1великая страна шумела, пока строились тракторные заводы и создавались грандиозные зерновые фабрики, старик Синицкий, ребусник по профессии, сидел в своей комнате и, устремив остекленевшие глаза в потолок, сочинял шараду на модное слово "индустриализация".
У Синицкого была наружность гнома. Таких гномов обычно изображали маляры на вывесках зонтичных магазинов. Вывесочные гномы стоят в красных колпаках и дружелюбно подмигивают прохожим, как бы приглашая их поскорее купить шелковый зонтик или трость с серебряным набалдашником в виде собачьей головы. Длинная желтоватая борода Синицкого опускалась прямо под стол, в корзину для бумаг.
-- Индустриализация, -- горестно шептал он, шевеля бледными, как сырые котлеты, старческими губами.
И он привычно разделил это слово на шарадные части:
-- Индус. Три. Али. За.
Все это было прекрасно. Синицкий уже представлял себе пышную шараду, значительную по содержанию, легкую в чтении и трудную для отгадки. Сомнение вызывала последняя часть -- "ция".
-- Что же это за "ция" такая? -- напрягался старик. -- Вот если бы "акция"! Тогда отлично вышло бы: индустриализакция.
Промучившись полчаса и не выдумав, как поступить с капризным окончанием, Синицкий решил, что конец придет сам собой, и приступил к работе. Он начал писать свою поэму на листе, вырванном из бухгалтерской книги с надписью "дебет".
Сквозь белую стеклянную дверь балкона видны были цветущие акации, латаные крыши домов и резкая синяя черта морского горизонта. Черноморский полдень заливал город кисельным зноем.
Старик подумал и нанес на бумагу начальные строки:
Мой первый слог сидит в чалме,
Он на Востоке быть обязан.
-- Он на Востоке быть обязан, -- с удовольствием произнес
старик.
Ему понравилось то, что он сочинил, трудно было тольконайти рифмы к словам "обязан" и "чалме". Ребусник походил по комнате и потрогал руками бороду. Вдруг его осенило:
Второй же слог известен мне,
Он с цифрою как будто связан.
С "Али" и "За" тоже удалось легко справиться:
В чалме сидит и третий слог,
Живет он тоже на Востоке.
Четвертый слог поможет бог
Узнать, что это есть предлог.
Утомленный последним усилием, Синицкий отвалился на спинку стула и закрыл глаза. Ему было уже семьдесят лет. Пятьдесят из них он сочинял ребусы, шарады, загадочные картинки и шарадоиды. Но никогда еще почтенному ребуснику не было так трудно работать, как сейчас. Он отстал от жизни, был политически неграмотен, и молодые конкуренты легко его побивали. Они приносили в редакции задачи с такой прекрасной идеологической установкой, что старик, читая их, плакал от зависти. Куда ему было угнаться за такой, например, задачей:
ЗАДАЧА -- АРИФМОМОИД
На трех станциях: Воробьево, Грачево и Дроздово было по
равному количеству служащих. На станции Дроздово было
комсомольцев в шесть раз меньше, чем на двух других вместе
взятых, а на станции Воробьево партийцев было на 12 человек
больше, чем на станции Грачево. Но на этой последней
беспартийных было на 6 человек больше, чем на первых двух.
Сколько служащих было на каждой станции и какова там была
партийная и комсомольская прослойка?
Очнувшись от своих горестных мыслей, старик снова взялся за листок с надписью "дебет", но в это время в комнату вошла девушка с мокрыми стрижеными волосами и черным купальным костюмом на плече.
Она молча пошла на балкон, развесила на облупленных перилах сырой костюм и глянула вниз. Девушка увидела бедный двор, который видела уже много лет, -- нищенский двор, где валялись разбитые ящики, бродили перепачканные углем коты и жестянщик с громом чинил ведро. В нижнем этаже домашние хозяйки разговаривали о своей тяжелой жизни.
И разговоры эти девушка слышала не в первый раз, и котов она знала по имени, и жестянщик, как ей показалось, чинил это самое ведро уже много лет подряд. Зося Синицкая вернулась в комнату.
-- Идеология заела, - услышала она бормотание деда, -- а какая в ребусном деле может быть идеология? Ребусное дело...
Зося заглянула в старческие каракули и сейчас же крикнула:
-- Что ты тут написал? Что это такое? "Четвертый слог поможет бог узнать, что это есть предлог". Почему бог? Ведь ты сам говорил, что в редакции теперь не принимают шарад с церковными выражениями.
Синицкий ахнул. Крича: "Где бог, где? Там нет бога", он дрожащими руками втащил на нос очки в белой оправе и ухватился за листок.
-- Есть бог, -- промолвил он печально. -- Оказался... Опять маху дал. Ах, жалко! И рифма пропадает хорошая.
-- А ты вместо "бог" поставь "рок", - сказала Зося.
Но испуганный Синицкий отказался от "рока".
-- Это тоже мистика. Я знаю. Ах, маху дал! Что же это будет, Зосенька?
Зося равнодушно посмотрела на деда и посоветовала сочинить новую шараду.
-- Все равно, -- сказала она, -- слово с окончанием "ция" у тебя не выходит. Помнишь, как ты мучился со словом "теплофикация"?
-- Как же, -- оживился старик, -- я еще третьим слогом поставил "кац" и написал так: "А третий слог, досуг имея, узнает всяк фамилию еврея". Не взяли эту шараду. Сказали: "Слабо, не подходит". Маху дал!
Translation - English New trends also started in the area of rebuses, charades, charadoids, logogriphs, and picture puzzles. Old-fashioned products went out of style. The editors of newspaper and magazine features like “In Your Leisure Hours” or “Wiggle a Brain Wrinkle” had resolutely stopped taking any non-ideological merchandise. So while the mighty country made a lot of noise, while tractor factories were being built and magnificent collective grain-farms were being constructed, old man Sinitsky, a rebus-maker by trade, sat in his room staring at the ceiling with glassy eyes, composing a charade based on the fashionable word “industrialized.”
To all outward appearances, Sinitsky looked like a gnome. Painters often depicted gnomes like this on the signs of stores selling umbrellas. (The advertising gnomes stand there in their pointed red caps, winking amicably at passers-by, inviting them, as it were, to hurry up and buy a silk umbrella or a walking stick topped with a silver knob shaped like a dog’s head.) Sinitsky’s long, yellowish beard flowed straight down under the table into the wastepaper basket.
“Industrialized,” he whispered woefully, moving his old man’s lips, pale as raw cutlets. He separated the word into parts for the charade, as usual: “Indus. Tree. Awl.” All that was wonderful so far. Sinitsky was already imagining a luxuriant charade that was meaningful in content, easy to read, and difficult to solve. Only the last part seemed doubtful: ‘ized.’
“What kind of word is this anyway? ‘Ized!’” the old man said, straining with effort. “If only it were ‘sized!’ Then it would turn out beautifully: ‘industrialsized.’”
After torturing himself for a half an hour without coming up with any way to deal with the capricious ending, Sinitsky decided that the final syllable would come to him on its own, and got down to work. He began writing his epic poem on a page torn from an account book, with the word Debits printed at the top.
He could see blooming acacias, the patched roofs of buildings, and the sharp blue outline of the sea on the horizon through the white glass balcony door. The sweet, torrid heat of midday poured over Chernomorsk like warm jelly.
The old man thought for a minute and then laid the first lines down on the page:
My first word flows past men in turbans,
And in the East its home it makes.
“And in the East its home it makes,” the old man said with satisfaction. He liked what he’d composed, it was just hard to find rhymes for ‘turbans’ and ‘makes.’ He walked around the room and fiddled with his beard with both hands. Suddenly it dawned on him:
The second word is not so urban,
When autumn comes we all need rakes.
He was also lucky enough to take care of ‘awl’ easily:
The cobbler’s one-eyed tool for sewing
You’ll recognize with ease, God willing.
Sinitsky, tired out by this last effort, fell back in the chair and closed his eyes. He was no less than seventy years old. He had composed rebuses, charades, picture puzzles, and charadoids for fifty of those years. But the work had never been as hard for the respected rebus-maker as it was now. He had fallen behind the times and was now politically illiterate, so his young competitors beat him out easily. They would bring the editor puzzles with such a beautiful political line that the old man would read them and weep with envy. He hadn’t a chance of catching up with a puzzle like this one, for example:
An Arithmomoid Puzzle
Three stations, Vorobyovo, Grachevo, and Drozdovo, are staffed by an equal number of office workers. At Drozdovo station there are six times fewer Young Communist League members than at the other two stations taken together, but at Vorobyovo station, there are twelve more Party members than at Grachevo station. But at the latter, there are six more non-Party members than at the first two. How many office workers are there at each station, and what are the sizes of the Party and Young Communist League cadres at each one?
Recovering from his sorrowful thoughts, the old man settled down once more to the page headed Debits, but at that moment, a young woman with short, wet hair and a black bathing suit slung over her shoulder walked into the room.
Without a word she walked out onto the balcony, hung her wet bathing suit on the peeling handrail, and looked down. The young woman saw the same poor courtyard she’d been seeing for many years—a poverty-stricken courtyard strewn with broken boxes, where coal-smudged cats wandered around and a tinker was thunderously repairing a bucket. Down on the lower floors, the housewives were talking about their difficult lives.
The young woman was hearing these conversations for the umpteenth time; and she knew the name of each and every cat; and the tinker had been repairing that same bucket, it seemed to her, for the past several years. Zosya Sinitskaya went back inside.
“This ideology is eating me up,” she heard her grandpa mutter. “What kind of ideology can there be in the rebus-making profession? The professional rebus-maker…”
Zosya took a glance at the old man’s scribbles and instantly shouted, “What did you write there? What’s that supposed to be? ‘The cobbler’s one-eyed tool for sewing, you’ll recognize with ease, God willing?’ Why God? You were just saying yourself that editors aren’t taking charades with churchly expressions anymore.”
Sinitsky gasped. With shaking hands he dragged his white-rimmed glasses onto his nose and snatched up the piece of paper, shouting, “Where’s God? Where? There’s no God in there!”
Then he said, sadly, “God is in there… he turned up… I’ve botched it again! Oh my land, what a shame! And a good rhyme’ll go to waste, too.”
“Just use ‘fate’ instead of ‘God,’” Zosya said.
But Sinitsky, spooked, rejected “fate.”
“That’s also mysticism. I know it. Oh my land, I botched it! What’s going on nowadays, Zosenka?”
Zosya glanced at her grandpa indifferently and advised him to compose a new charade. “It doesn’t make any difference,” she said, “you won’t be able to do anything with a word that ends in ‘ized.’ Remember how you suffered when you were working on ‘absolutized?’”
“Of course I do,” said the old man, livening up. “I spelled the second word ‘saul’ and wrote it up like this:
In the second word, before you’re through
You’ll hear the name of a Hebrew.
They didn’t take that one. They said, ‘It’s weak, it’s not our kind of thing.’ I botched it!”

Anne O. Fisher holds a PhD in Russian Literature from the University of Michigan, which she earned in the most delightful way: researching the reading and publication history of two of Soviet Russia’s most popular books, Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov’s novels about the con man Ostap Bender (The Twelve Chairs, 1928, and The Little Golden Calf, 1931). Other scholarly interests include readers and reading in early Soviet literature, notably in the works of Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky. Her Russian>English translation career began with Ilf and Petrov, who are woefully undertranslated, and has since branched out considerably.
She has also worked as a Russian-English court interpreter for the State of Kentucky, and has volunteered as an interpreter for Planned Parenthood and Sister Cities. Anne enjoys bookbinding and paper arts, and is looking forward to getting her cycling legs back after a long hiatus from cycle-touring.
Her favorite Russian artist, for whom she has done several translations, is Leonid Tishkov. Her current literary translation projects include the diaries of Ilya Ilf (with Alexandra Ilf) and the poetry of Maxim Amelin (with Derek Mong).
