I look at my job this way: I should at least try to be available during "normal" work hours from Monday to Friday. However, this means I'm pretty much confined to my apartment so I can be sure I don't miss any job offers. This is why I bought a BlackBerry. With it, I can feel free to go out during the week if I need to. If I get an e-mail, I can answer it right on the BlackBerry and at least let the client know that I got the message. If it's a job and I'm close to home, I just let them know I'm on my way. Otherwise, I leave them hanging and and job goes to someone else. I don't think this makes me look "needy." It's being professional.

No matter where I am, I can always write back on the BlackBerry within 15 minutes (using your example of the freeway, grocery store, dentist's chair, etc.).

On the weekends I don't feel the need to be so attentive to this because I rarely get a job offer on a Saturday or Sunday. But I keep the BlackBerry on for other e-mails that might come through when I'm away from home. I don't find it an interruption any more than I would a phone call from a friend.

Black Berries are overrated Aug 4, 2008

Please note that you don't have to have a Black Berry to receive e-mails. Any modern cell phone can do that. I just bought a Sony Ericsson for € 169 and it works more than fine! Everytime an e-mail arrives in my account, a note is sent directly to my cell phone with the sender's name. If I am interested, I can quickly download the content of the e-mail (using High Speed). All this at the cost of € 5 per month! Try it!

But what if you need or want to reply to that e-mail? It would probably take half an hour on your SonyEricsson keyboard.
