As some of you know, Arianna Tremayne and myself have been organising monthly powwows in the friendly Grafton Arms for translators based in the London area. Our Stammtisch has been going strong for over a year now and we usually draw a friendly crowd of regulars and first-timers.

As some of you know, Arianna Tremayne and myself have been organising monthly powwows in the friendly Grafton Arms for translators based in the London area. Our Stammtisch has been going strong for over a year now and we usually draw a friendly crowd of regulars and first-timers.
So far the London Stammtisch has been a very informal affair, mainly devoted to chatting and getting to know each other. I think this format works and we should keep it this way, but we could also start experimenting with a new format by offering short presentations followed by Q&A on a topic related to the art and business of translation. We could aim at having a talk every two or three months.
What is obviously needed are volunteer presenters, as well as ideas and suggestions from the community! As we all have different backgrounds, interests and areas of expertise, we could start sharing them with others in a slightly more formal way. Following some feedback from regular participants, this thread can serve as a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas as to how to take this forward.
To sum it up:
- Do you think this is a good idea?
- Would you like to be our first volunteer presenter?
- What topics would you be interested in?

However, it probably needs more than just volunteer presenters, but also a sort of moderator or at least some sort of time-limit to it? So that you can make sure that topics do not develop into a very heated discussion that will then eat up all the time you can spend chatting to each other.

I am drawing my ideas from other networking events (not industry related) that I have been attending. There you often have some sort of business presentation/talk/Q&A session at the beginning, but the organisers make sure that after let's say 30 minutes you devote your time entirely to networking as this is often more specific to an individual's needs.
Suggestion for topics:
How to use online networking platforms that are not translation-related to promote yourself as a freelance translator. How to find business advice, make contact, find potential customers, make the best of your online presence.
and possibly related to this:
How to use online tools such as GoogleAds, YahooAds to promote yourself and get listed in search results.

If you've been to any of the Stammtisch meetings (apologies if we've met and I don't remember!), you'll know that the upstairs room of Grafton Arms is very low tech, there is no internet connection and the venue is not suitable for proper business meetings with projectors, PowerPoint presentations etc. As an alternative, presenters could distribute hand-outs prior to their talk to summarise their main points and list their suggestions - pretty much like we used to do it at uni There is no budget for powwows, so room and equipment rental needs to be free of charge...
I think your topic suggestions are great, now we just need a volunteer presenter... Any pointers? How about yourself?

I wouldn't feel comfortable presenting search engine marketing as this is something I've only just started to explore and I feel I do not know nearly enough about it. However, I think there are some Prozians out there who are very experienced at this so maybe it's worth keeping our eyes open and contacting them when we spot someone UK-based?
Well, let's see what our fellow Powwow visitors would like to see and when it gets to finalising everything we can maybe talk over email or skype or similar.

I am afraid I was one of those people who was a mile away from last pow-wow but was unable to attend (I was in middle of crucial business discussion). However, I strive to attend on a regular basis. I have 6 years experience in translation business from management to freelance translator (yes, that way round) so I seek connectivity, support and collaboration opportunities plus a willingness to learn and improve too.
So how about 6 people giving 5 min 'sharings' (doesn't matter who a... I agree with Franziska's idea that the talk should be no longer than 30 minutes (followed by questions and discussion). David's idea of short presentations could also be fruitful. If, for example, nobody wants to give a 30-minute talk in the first one, I suggest asking for 2 to 4 volunteers to talk for 5 to 10 minutes each on some topic. Maybe the first one or two events of that type will clarify what we like and will inspire somebody to prepare a 30-minute presentation.

The premises: As you probably know I don't consider the Grafton Arms to be suitable for us, but at least it's usable and it's free. I know, if I want to criticise it, I should find a good alternative! Might the staff agree to turn off the loudspeaker "music" for the duration of our events with talks? (only once per 1 or 2 months, after all)
If there is a mains socket available, somebody could bring a laptop computer for a presentation and its screen could be seen by a dozen people with suitable arrangement of the furniture. I guess its screen would need to be at least 15 inches (38 cm).
Perhaps I'll have further thoughts soon.

I would leave it to the individual presenters to define the format and length of their presentation. We could simply gather around the table and somebody would give a brief talk, e.g. for 10-15 minutes on their chosen topic or the presenter could opt out for a more formal approach, e.g. using a laptop or handouts. It depends what people are most comfortable with.
Oliver - I can certainly check about the socket and ask the pub staff to keep the music to a minimum downstairs during presentations.

I thought it may be useful to have a forum to exchange ideas & experiences with reference materials & CAT tools, especially on how to comply with EN-15038, the European Quality Standard for Translation Services.

I am new to Proz and gradually making a transition to working as a freelancer. I attended the last Stammtisch, and remembered a comment about a 'changing business environment'. This would be interesting to me, to what extent is the freelance translation business environment changing, what was it before, what is it likely to become in the future? What are the skill sets, apart from the obvious language skills, that 'business' requires of me?

Unfortunately, Grafton Arms is already booked out on the last Saturday of March - I got there too late. Sorry, but life's been too busy of late... Unless we find an alternative venue, we'll have to skip the March event to be reunited again in April - Grafton has already been booked. I'll keep you updated in case there are any changes. There might be a possibility of an alternative venue in March, but nothing has been confirmed as yet, so I don't want to make an announcement.
