Hello folks, I recently discovered a brillant feature in Word 2007 and thought I'd share. It may have been around for ages, but anyway it was new to me... It may have been around for ages, but anyway it was new to me... I'm talking about the format painter (in German: Format übertragen), which is this little paint brush that can be found on the 'Home' tab, but even better, it's also in the little formatting box that pops up when you right-click on some text in your file. I work with rather colourful Trados files - the text I have to translate is usually red, and after I translated it, it's blue. So I often have this annoying little problem that when I copy text I already translated from somewhere else in my Trados file and insert it in the current segment, the colour is wrong and often the other formatting as well. But now, all I have to do is right-click in the target segment, click on the paint brush and then highlight the inserted bits with the mouse while the paint brush symbol diplays next to the cursor. When I release the mouse button - hey presto, the text all looks the same! I'm sure this has saved me years of my life! Oh, and in case this little feature really has been around for ages - please don't tell me! (c; OK, I won't, but I can tell you this: if you double-click the paint brush, you can then copy the formatting to several different places in the text (by then clicking on them, one after the other, or "wiping" the mouse pointer over them), and then cancel this mode by pressing Escape. Until recently, I was happily using Word 2003 and it did absolutely anything I could possibly need. However, I felt that I had better get the latest version of Windows along with Office 2010 - not because I expected it to boost my productivity one iota, but simply due to the fear of losing face from sending work to clients in an increasingly 'antiquated' version of Word. However, I felt that I had better get the latest version of Windows along with Office 2010 - not because I expected it to boost my productivity one iota, but simply due to the fear of losing face from sending work to clients in an increasingly 'antiquated' version of Word. Well, the other day I was delighted because I thought tht I had found a situation in which I could use one of the 'cool' new features of my new version of Word. I was working with a long submission to a court in which various lengthy company names and addresses were repeated over and over again, but different fonts were used all over the place - sometimes bold, sometimes italics, sometimes underlined etc. Brilliant, I thought, I can copy these proper names from just up above (where it may be, say, in italics, no underlining) and copy directly into the paragraph I am working on supposedly into the format of the current paragraph (e.g. bold, no underlining). I clicked on the correct version of paste and found that in only about half of all times did it alter the font to match that of the sentence I was working on. In my opinion, these new versions of Microsoft programmes that deliver no new features that are particularly useful for most people but one is nevertheless forced to buy are the biggest scam on the planet. OK, Bill Gates does good work with his AIDS charity but apart from that he is rich enough already. ▲ Collapse | | | Caro Maucher Germany Local time: 08:19 Member (2005) English to German + ... aah yes, I think I know that one too. I call it the sometimes it will, sometimes it won't feature. Sometimes after pasting the little 'paste' icon will pop up, and by clicking on that I can tell it again which formatting to use (TARGET!!!), and sometimes it won't - which I think is how I came to discover the Format Painter feature in the first place. @ Oliver: I read something like that on the Microsoft Office Website earlier when I was writing the post, but they didn't explain i... Hi every body, You are right this old feature in office is a wonderful one. Here is one more tip to make it in a more practical way: The shortcut keys for copying and pasting format instead of using the paint format icon: 1- highlight the text - Ctrl + Shift + C = copy format - Ctrl + Shift + v = paste format The copied format is keot in the memory, so you can apply it hundreds of times, without having to copy the same ...
