Dear Roxana,

calm down - nobody took advantage of your work and experience. Or have you worked for them and didn't get paid? So what is the damage exactly?
Since the invention of Internet there has been data mining and neither you nor I, let stand any government, will prevent it.
If your data are in the web, they will stay there for many years to come. If you have a profile on a public site like Proz.com, your data are vulnerable to data mining - facts of life.

I doubt, demanding removal will help much. Tomorrow or over a few moths there is new wise guy who will collect your date from somewhere.

Regards

Hans (on the Internet since the early 80's)

I'm sorry, Hans, but I don't agree with your post. We're publishing our professional details on ProZ.com and other websites because we CHOOSE to do so but that does not give anyone permission to mine the data and publish them elsewhere without our permission!

The damage is that personal profile details including name (or username), work history, CVs etc. (including my own stolen from another website where I luckily went by a username) have been copied and used to create password-protected accounts to which we have no access. Funnily enough, they copied everything except our email addresses.

It's not just a case of our details having been copied and posted elsewhere, but a case of identity fraud, where the new account-holder purports to be a professional translator (you, me or any one of our colleagues) for financial gain, with obvious consequences on our professional reputations.

Very annoyed Jul 18, 2009

Have just found I'm on OutsourcingRoom and I'd never heard of it or the other one. I only found I was there by entering my rarely used Login/user name - nice, great security, not (a general comment about the Internet, not necessarily Proz).... I use the same login name elsewhere and, although I could change the name, thinking up new names is a nuisance and anyway, they can mine that too, I suppose.

Same here Jul 18, 2009

I'm on that site too, with an almost empty profile with my username (not my full name), which contains only my location.
I do also think there is a breach on Proz.com's security system, and I wouldn't be surprised if all Proz.com members were on that site.

We should send a support ticket, in case no one has already done that.

P.S. I have just found out that this isn't necessarily a Proz security problem; there are many software created to collect such information

P.S. I have just found out that this isn't necessarily a Proz security problem; there are many software created to collect such information directly from profiles; they surf and collect all information shown, then they store it in a database and re-use it for other purposes.

I am also on their website, although I was only able to find this by searching my name through Google. A search on the outsourcingroom website itself came up empty. A search on the website for Spanish translation and proofreading professionals also came up empty so data may have been removed following the posting of comments here. Disturbing...

strangely enough as I'm not that active here.

I demanded my profile to be removed immediately. Let's see if they comply.

It may be obvious for all, but who knows: do not try to login there using your password

Totally agree with texjax Jul 18, 2009

I demand a prompt, clear an exhausting explanation about these recurrent “flaws” of the system, and I’d like to ask what action–if any–the site will undertake against the actors of the latest “mass retrieval of information”, and which measures Proz.com intends to implement for avoiding these regrettable episodes from happening again in the future.
If nothing will be done in this regard ultimately I will cancel my membership.

I have nothing to add to that except thank you for phrasing it so well, texjax. The fact that OutsourcingRoom posts my real name instead of just my username makes it obvious that what little information is there was not collected from my public profile by some specific software, but-- how shall I put it--"actively retrieved" from ProZ.com, which supposedly protects that information.

Dear Hans,

This is the most laid-back attitude on the illegal act called plagiarism I have ever seen in my life! I won't even mention a series of financial and professional reputation damages that may result from it.

Say a novel gets published and distributed into the world, and it's out there on the market open to intellectual property theft and abuse, and there's nothing we can do about it?. The authors know their rights. I don't see why my ProZ profile content wouldn't retain the same kind of copyrights, seen from the legal point of view?

Thank you Jul 18, 2009

Thank you Roxana for letting us know!
I have just found out that I have a profile on that website, but I have never ever created one. I am sure of this. Luckly it is almost empty.

The only strange thing is that I couldn't find me searching my name and surname, but I did find me searching a nickname I used in the past.

I would really like to know how they got my data and what is their purpose.

This is nothing very original, there were/are several sites rival to them, the unclear part is if they hope to charge the job posters for posting jobs and if they intent to pay actual performers of service at all.

One thing which is VERY clear - after THEM updating our profiles and making them very attractive, so the outsourcer will be lured into ordering, it will not be us who will get the job.

Yes, there's apparently a breach on ProZ. Jul 18, 2009

I didn't find me on elance, but I did on outsourcingroom. "My" profile there uses my ProZ.com nickname, and then lists my "real" name in a format that does not appear on any of the public-access pages of ProZ (or anywhere else, AFAIK). I'm not overly concerned about the breach in my own case, since I do not do business under either of the names listed there. However, I would be in favor of asking the ProZ staff to investigate this matter. Has anyone submitted a support ticket yet, and if so, did you give a link to this thread? If no one has done so, I will, but I don't want to duplicate the request.
