Definition / notes:Former president of Colombia (1998-2002). Andrés Pastrana, a former mayor of Bogotá and a Conservative Party member who ran as a coalition candidate of the Great Alliance for Change, won Colombia\'s June 21, 1998, runoff presidential election. He defeated Horacio Serpa, interior minister under outgoing President Ernesto Samper and the Liberal Party candidate. He campaigned on a peace platform, promising to negotiate with the FARC-EP and other rebel groups. As a trust-building measure, he ceded the Zone to FARC-EP guerrillas for peace talks. Peace talks finally broke down in early 2002 and the president ordered the military to re-take the Zone.Biblioteca de Consulta Microsoft ® Encarta ® 2005. © 1993-2004 Microsoft Corporation.
