ningún loco come lumbre

Discussion

Miguel Fuentes Nov 28, 2006:
This saying is about a liar who tries to fool people; this is not about someone stupid but sane or crazy but slow. On the flip side, it impñlies a process, it's not one big goof (shoot oneself), but a performance3 he will not dare take beyond a point.
Miguel Fuentes Nov 28, 2006:
How much time do you have for this? The proverb is to expose a bluffer. Some people may take an act a long way to convince others. Some will even take live coals in their mouth, but when it comes to chewing and swallowing the stuff... you bet they'll quit

(wouldn't be so stupid as to) shoot himself in the foot

Creo que ése es el sentido de la frase aquí. Lo de ningún loco come lumbre alude a que por tonto o loco que sea una persona no se haría daño a sí misma.

shoot oneself in the foot
Foolishly harm one's own cause.

I've heard like: "no hay borracho que coma lumbre".
I don't know an equivalent proverb in English, though the meaning is clear:
No matter how wild you are (or you pretend to be), you won't hurt yourself.

If I find the equivalent proverb I'l come back. I suspect Twain may have a " gold-nugget" for us in stock.
