Все только и слушали – узнать что-нибудь о войне, о своём городе, о детях. Всякое полученное письмо читали публично – громко, пропуская личные слова, но общие известия сообщая обязательно. Туда же, в Нижний Новгород, привозили пленных французов. С ними обходились хорошо – кормили, чем могли, давали тепло, а проклятия, если и шептали, то тихо, без злобы.
Чаще всего ве́сти приходили печальные – о смерти. Екатерина Александровна узнала, что Павел убит на турецком фронте, что юный Александр убит в армии, на дуэли… Александр I приезжал к ней **выслушать её слёзы,** утешить. Вдова Павла Гавриловича (польская дворянка) вдвойне горевала о смерти мужа – теперь ей предстояло жить одной с нелюбимой свекровью. Но горе для неё закончится сразу после войны – она выйдет замуж за Александра Христофоровича Бенкендорфа (выделявшегося при Александре I, но, безусловно, наибольшую славу узнавшего при Николае I).
Война забрала у Екатерины Александровны двух сыновей, ещё одного – покалечила. Дмитрий Бибиков был адъютантом Михаила Кутузова. При Бородине ему ядром оторвало руку. Он вспоминал об этом случае: «Руки нет а я всё сижу верхом на своей лошади. Подъезжаю к тому месту, где доктора перевязывали раненных.
