بتکده

Persian (Farsi) to English Social Sciences History History of Religion
Hi,

What exactly is a بتکده (botkade), please?

Apologies for the lack of context. All I can say is that I heard it during a theological discussion on one of the many Persian-language Christian TV channels.

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

house of idols

this is pretty much what it means literally..."botkade" is another word for "botkhane"..."house of idols" conveys the religious connotation in the religious discussion

In my dictionaries I learned that the word "pagoda" comes from Portuguese from "botkade"...very interesting...also some Sanskrit influence...however, the word "pagoda" does not really have much of a religious connotation in English...that is, if we used "pagoda" no one would think of a place where idols were kept

Further comment...when we hear "pagoda" in English we think of a special, multistory building in China or Japan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pagoda
...that is, if we use "pagoda" it really confines the context to the Far East.
