The switch is open unless it senses the presence of the operator. It could be a simple pushbutton (big) that the operator has to stand on or press with a foot.

These are standard safety devices on factory floors and other areas (shipping facilities, etc.) where heavy equipment is in motion. (For what it's worth, "rele immateriali" are wireless relays (or sensors), such as optoelectronic beams which, when broken, trigger an alarm.)
