German term

Spülküche

German to English Science Science (general) Research facility
Muastierhaltung.
Die Spulkuche darf nicht mehr als 1 Geschoss von einer der Barrieren entfernt sein. Bei Ordnung der Maustierhtaltung in den oberen Geschossen, muss die Anbindung uber einen Lastenlift gewahrleistet.

This is from a specifications document asking for tenders to design a research builid¡ng. Spulkuche has me stumped.

Discussion

Sabine Voigt Apr 30, 2008:
For animal facilities this refers to mainly a washing and sanitizing facility for cages, feeding bottles etc. See also here, slide 36: http://www.laborrunde.de/pdf/scholze.pdf
German link, (see Einleitung): http://tiny.cc/ubZv8
Sabine Voigt Apr 30, 2008:
Spülküche in a research lab facility is the place where glassware is washed and sanitized, and culture media autoclaved. A lot more is going on than rinsing (no offence to the authors of the MPG glossary).
Erik Freitag Apr 30, 2008:
Sorry for prematurely having reclassified this as non-pro! Thanks to Steffen for correcting me.
LegalTrans D Apr 30, 2008:
Thank you, Sarah. I see it's already been corrected.
Sarah Lowndes (asker) Apr 30, 2008:
It wasn´t nit picking at all. You are absolutely right.
LegalTrans D Apr 30, 2008:
Didn't mean to be nit-picking, Sarah. Reason I pointed this out was that your question will be entered in the KudoZ database as "Spulkuche". If then someone does a search on "Spülküche", he will neither find this question nor the answers.
Sarah Lowndes (asker) Apr 30, 2008:
Thanks, but a scullery seems to be more from Victorian times and not a state of the art research building.
Sarah Lowndes (asker) Apr 30, 2008:
Spuelkueche Sorry, Spanish keyboard. My mistake. It should be Spuelkueche.
LegalTrans D Apr 30, 2008:
Surely "Spülküche" or "Spuelkueche", Sarah?

German term (edited): Spülkuche

scullery

Is this the original spelling of your source text? It's full of misspellings and grammar errors. I would consider refusing to translate it.

The word is "Spülküche", not "Spulkuche".

You can find it in any dictionary.

I see. Well, the German "Spülküche" does not quite sound like high-tech either.
Note from asker:
I have found it in the dictionary but I am not convinced in this context. I was wondering perhaps if it were a more technical term referring to research labs.
True. Maybe I´m making life more complicated than it should be.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Steffen Walter : ***In this particular context***, I strongly disagree with this question being classified "Non-Pro", which is why I've changed the category again.

wash room (or washroom)

I was pretty sure of this before I googled 'wash room mouse facility' and found lots of hits...

Note added at 4 hrs (2008-04-30 12:48:42 GMT)

This is where the cages get washed on a regular basis, etc.... not just 'rinsed'
Example sentence:

This must include the entire team, from the director of the facility, to the maintenance staff, to the wash room staff, to the animal care staff and must ...

when animal work is not co-located with washroom infrastructure; ...

Peer comment(s):

agree Sabine Voigt : Or washing facility.
