German term or phrase: jemandem das Zeugnis christlicher Treue geben
This phrase comes from some German-American (Lutheran) church records dating to 1902. I understand the meaning of the words ("evidence/proof of Christian fidelity/faithfulness"), but not sure how it fits into the sentence below:

Der Visitator redete zunächst von der Bedeutung der Visitation. Sodann veranlaßte er eine Aussprache über die in der Visitations-Ordnung angegebenen Punkte. Er stellte sodann die Frage an den Vorstand, ob dem Pastor das Zeugnis christlicher Treue gegeben werden kann betreffs seiner Lehre, Amtsverwaltung oder seines Lebens und Wandels.

My best guess is: "He then posed the question to the church board, whether proof of Christian fidelity can be given (maybe attributed?) to the pastor with regard to his teachings, the administration of his office, or his life and conduct." Am I on the right track here, or am I missing something?

English translation:(his life) attests to Christian faithfulness
Explanation:
I don't think "proof" or "evidence" fit into this context, and I also think it would be easier to reword the sentence - whether the pastor's doctrine, life and conduct etc attest to the Christian faith.

"witness to" or "reflect" could also be options.

bearing witness to [someone's] Christian faith

Explanation:
Treue here suggests 'obedience' rather than 'faith' (Glaube), but hey, what does an atheist know about those things
