This term occurs several times in a scientific article about elastomers, specifically sealing profiles. Examples of context:

"... der Vergleich zweier Belastungsfälle: die freie, mit ausgeprägter Gestaltsänderungsarbeit verbundene Profilverpressung und die gekammerte Verpressung mit ausgeprägter Kompressionsarbeit"

"Für die Volumenänderungsarbeit können theoretisch zwei Grenzfälle angeführt werden: die vollständig inkompressible Gestaltsänderungsarbeit und die reine Kompressionsarbeit."

Langenscheidt (Dictionary of Technology and Applied Sciences) gives "distortion strain work" or "shear strain work" but I found little to back this up.

Asker: Thanks, Barbara, I started out translating it as "deformation work" but the German for that seems to be Verformungsarbeit. The article I'm translating mentions Verformung as well as Gestaltsänderung, e.g. "Eine zunehmende Flächenpressung und Probenverformung vermindert ... die inkompressible Gestaltsänderung ..."
