German term

Stegbauweise

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering batons
This is a description of how batons (to fit inside a shade sail) are constructed. The full sentence in which the term is found is as follows:

Sie werden aus speziell für uns produzierten GFK - Laminaten in Stegbauweise formverleimt.

This is a short description of what this method entails:

Die Vorspannungsprofile haben einen Unterbogen aus 2 durchgehenden Laminatstreifen und einen Überbogen aus 3 durchgehenden Laminatstreifen, diese beiden Bögen sind mit einem Abstand zueinander mittels „Stegen“ oder Laminatblöcken fest verbunden, bzw. verklebt, sprich unsere Leiste hat „Lufträume in der mittleren Schicht“.

Could anybody throw any light on this specific term in English please? Many thanks in advance!

Discussion

Chris Foster Feb 14, 2013:
It is possible and probably advisable to translate the description of the construction without trying to translate Stegbauweise. The Stege are described further in the text and appear to be just laminate spacers /spacing blocks. The same goes for translating „Lufträume in der mittleren Schicht“. You need to find a meaningful equivalent for the target readership otherwise it will end up sounding clunky.

(spar and) rib construction

From your description, I think Stegbau and Spantenbau are the same idea and involve "ribs" that hold apart/together the surfaces and give them their shape.

As an example, in an aircraft wing you have spars that run the length of the wing, take up the load etc. and ribs that run perpendicular to the spars and carry the wing profile.

Depending on whether spars are involved, I'd say either:
"spar and rib construction" or "ribbed construction"
