monospaced fonts

Explanation:
You don't give us a great deal of context to go on, but given the meaning of 'calépinage' in construction etc., I have a hunch this could mean monospaced — i.e. all the letters have the same width and hence spacing, as on a typewriter, and in certain electronic fonts like Courier.

However, it may depend on your context; such fonts were rare in the days of 'real' lead type, however, automatic founding systems (Monotype etc.) used to use an ingenious method for automatically adjusting the width of the type mould according to the position of the matrix that determined which actual letter was cast; I can see how this also might be described in a similar way — the fact that type body widths were selected from a smaller range of possible values, instead of being infinitely variable as with individual type moulds.

Explanation:
This is basically guesswork since there's absolutely no context.

agree  Tony M: Ah yes, that would make sense! My confidence level for 'agreeing', however, is as low as the amount of context we have.
