In my order of pref. Standard UK co. law textbooks have a section on 'mortgage' of shares, mortgage not being only of land but a 'chattel' mortgage.
Assignment of shares has oddly been accepted on ProZ.Com before, but is valid only if refers to the obscure point of assignment of the underlying 'chose-in-action' that the share is.
