French term

positionsquatting

Not for points French to English Tech/Engineering Internet, e-Commerce
Hi

Here's a strange question!

I'm working on something about online trade in counterfeits which mentions "positionsquatting," defined as buying brand names and trademarks as keywords to drive traffic to illicit sites.

So far so good, except that every search for "positionsquatting" on Google takes me to sites that are in some way related to France or translated from French.

Could this be a French term (based on "cybersquatting")?

Is anyone familiar with it in current English usage?

Many thanks!

I don't believe that 'positionsquatting' is in common usage in English but that 'cybersquatting' is.
Sandra Petch (asker) Apr 21, 2010:
Hi As I tried to explain, this doesn't appear to be a term in common English usage hence I suspect it's a French term based on the English term cybersquatting of which it is a form. My question is, has anyone encountered this term in proper use in English by native English speakers?

cybersquatting

Originally meant buying desirable domain names and waiting for someone to come and pay for them but now is broadened to mean sitting on any cyber asset - either for financial reasons or to support phishing attacks or similar.
Note from asker:
Thanks - positionsquatting seems to be a form of cybersquatting, but is it actually a bona fide English term?

Comment: "Thanks very much! I'm going with cybersquatting as positionsquatting just doesn't seem to be a valid English term."

Note from asker:
Thanks - as I mentioned in the question, the only occurrences of this term appear to be in French, hence why I'm questioning whether it's a bona fide English term.
Thanks for your help!
