parts

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters parts
This experiment is showing us that combining all the senses allows a baby to forge an emotional connection that is far bigger than the sum of its parts.

It is an experiment on premature babies, they are trying to see the impact of the mom interaction with the babies.

Do you think it is "senses" in this context?

Thanks in advance,

yes, you need to look at the whole expression 'greater than the sum of its parts' to understand this ST, explaining ONLY "parts" is simply pointless.

you might want to look at the definition

@ Asker Partly, yes... but possibly more.
This 'emotional connection' consists of many parts — obviously, sensory stimulation involves several important parts... but there could be others, perhaps more abstract ones...
You may like to know that 'greater than the sum of its parts' (and variants) is a standard expression in EN to describe the notion of 'synergy' — as such, you may want to treat the expression here as a whole, rather than try to break it down.

Hi, Sjaatoul,
You're on the right track. Yes. I would phrase the sentence as "...forge an emotional connection that is far bigger than just strengthening the baby's individual senses."
